Buffs Open Lone Star Conference Play with an 8-5 Victory over Eastern New Mexico

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M trailed early but plated seven runs over the third and fourth inning to open up Lone Star Conference play with an 8-5 win over the rival Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico in front of almost 200 fans at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas.
 
The Buffs and Greyhounds take the diamond at Wilder Park on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action with first pitch of a doubleheader scheduled for 4 p.m. in Canyon.

HOW IT HAPPENENED:
The Greyhounds got on the board in the top of the first inning as a pair of singles put Hounds on first and second with two outs before Julian Heredia launched a three-run homerun to straight away center field for the early 3-0 lead. ENMU added to their lead in the top of the second inning as a failed pickoff attempt moved a runner to third with one out before Zach Shank grounded out to short for the 4-0 advantage.
 
The Buffs cut into the lead in the home half of the third inning as reigning LSC Hitter of the Week Luis Amaro doubled to the right center field gap to score Bodie Bryan from second base with one out, Nick Canas doubled down the right field line to score a pair as WT cut the lead to 4-3. The Hounds added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning as Shank layed down a sacrifice squeeze bunt with one out to make it 5-3.
 
Nick Guaragna doubled to the left center field gap to start off the bottom of the fourth inning followed by a Tommy Williams RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 5-4, Justice Nakagawa doubled to left center as Williams scored all the way from first followed by a Bryan RBI single up the middle to give the Buffs a 6-5 lead with no outs. Bryan stole second and later scored on an Amaro sac fly to right field to make it 7-5. Guaragna added to the WT lead with a sac fly to right field to run the lead to 8-5.
 
Joe Corbett picked up the win (5-1) for the Buffs, allowing five runs on 11 hits with one walk and six strikeouts in his seven innings of work while Braden Baker picked up his third save of the season, allowing no runs on no hits with no walks and one strikeout in the final two innings.
