HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Buffs took the early lead in the bottom of the first as senior Bodie Bryan continued a strong start to the season with a double to begin the frame.
  • Senior Luis Amaro plated Bryan on a ground out for a 1-0 lead.
  • WT junior starter Joe Corbett got out of a jam in the first as the Rams had a runner at third, but Corbett got a pop out to first to end the threat.
  • The Rams took a 3-1 lead in the third as Jonathan Soberanes doubled and Nick Novak plated two runs and Andrew Morales scored the third.
  • ASU added another run in the fourth for a 4-1 lead on a double to right by Michael Urquidi who had a gem of a game, going 4 for 4, with three runs scored, two walks and two RBI, in the leadoff spot.
  • WT senior Luis Amaro opened the bottom of the fourth with a towering shot to right field hitting the softball clubhouse for a 4-2 score and, later in the inning, junior Christian Loya scored on a miscue by the Rams for a 4-3 deficit.
  • ASU answered right back in the top of the fifth as Novak began the frame with a single, stole second and scored on a Morales single for a 5-3 lead.
  • WT tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Bryan singled and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. After a ground out, Amaro singled home Bryan for a 5-4 score and then Loya tripled home Amaro for a 5-5 score.
  • ASU broke the game open with seven runs and 12 players coming to bat in the seventh for a 12-5 lead, highlighted by a Novak two run home run to right center and a two RBI single from Parker Bramlett as one WT error led to an unearned run.
  • Amaro came up with his third hit of the game and fourth RBI of the day in the bottom of the seventh for a 12-6 score, but the Rams added two more runs in the top of the ninth for the 14-6 margin.
