THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: No. 11 West Texas A&M 95, No. 19 UT Permian Basin 87

  • The Lead: For the first time since the 1997-98 season, the West Texas A&M men's basketball team is headed to the Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, S.D.   WT won a thrilling 95-87 victory over Lone Star Conference rival UT Permian Basin in the South Central Regional Final Tuesday evening at the First United Bank Center.  WT senior David Chavloivch earned South Central Region Tournament Most Valuable Player honors, while senior Jordan Evans also was named to the all-tournament team.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • In round four of the season series, the Buffs jumped out early by ten points capped with a triple from Chavlovich for a 15-5 lead with 16:06 left in the first in front of 1,974 fans, followed by a junior Gach Gach, as he bookend a 15-0 run with 14:29 left.
  • The game continued to get more physical as double technicals were assessed on Gach and UTPB's Josh Morris, with WT leading 20-9 with 12:06 left in the first half.
  • UTPB cut the deficit inside ten twice, but WT had the answer each time pushing the lead back to double digits.
  • Things got really chippy when UTPB's Zeldric King was called for a flagrant two foul and was ejected from the game with 6:30 left in the half with WT leading 36-23.
  • A 7-0 run by the Buffs with triples from Chavloivch and Evans pushed the lead to 19 and, with 51 seconds left, Chavlovich buried his fourth triple of the half for a 50-30 lead.
  • Two free throws from Daeshon Francis cut the deficit to 18 at intermission at 50-32.
  • Just as in its previous game, in the four-overtime marathon, 130-124 win over Regis, UTPB came out of the gates on fire in the second half as it cut the WT lead to eight with a 17-7 run through the first five minutes of the second half.
  • Evans buried his fourth triple of the game pushing the lead back to 11 at 60-49 with 15:03 left.
  • UTPB cut the deficit once again to seven tat 64-57 with 12:07 left on a layup from Renard Thomas and a triple from James McPherson, but a layup from freshman CJ Jennings and a jumper from Chavloivch pushed the lead back to double digits once again.
  • Two free throws from McPherson started a 9-2 run as UTPB cut the deficit to four on a layup from Francis with 2:57 left, but Evans hit his fifth triple at the other end pushing the lead back to seven.
  • A tip-in by Morris cut the WT lead to 84-79 with 49 seconds left, but a free throw by Chavlovich and a dunk from Jennings pushed the lead to eight as UTPB got no closer than six the rest of the way.
  • WT went 9 for 14 in the final minute in free throws to seal the win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT shot lights out in the first half, going 15 of 25 from the field for a season-best 60 percent, while going 10 of 14 from beyond the arc (.714) and 10 of 14 from the line.
  • Chavlovich had 15 points in the half, while Evans had 14 as the duo combined for 8 of 13 from the field and 7 of 9 from beyond the arc.
  • WT turned eight Falcon miscues into a 10-5 lead in points off turnovers, while UTPB led 14-6 in points in the paint.
  • UTPB was led by 16 points from LSC Player of the Year Daeshon Francis as he was 6 of 8 from the field and 4 of 7 from the line.
  • The Falcons, who entered shooting 50 percent from the field, shot just 41.4 percent on 12 of 29, while going 3 of 7 from beyond the arc and really struggled at the line going just 5 of 13 for a .385 clip.
  • For the game, WT shot 48.2 percent on 27 of 56, while going 15 of 33 from beyond the arc and 26 of 36 from the line (.722).
  • Chavlovich finished with a team-high 28 points on 9 of 18 from the field, 5 of 10 from range and made five free throws with six assists and two steals.
  • Evans went 5 of 10 from the field – all triples and was a career-best 11 of 13 from the line with six rebounds to lead the team.Gach added 16 points with four triples and junior Ryan Quaid added 12 points.
  • WT had 25 rebounds with 14 assists, seven turnovers, four blocks and four steals.
  • UTPB had a game-high 31 points from Francis who earned a spot on the all-tournament team as he was 13 of 20 from the field and went 5 of 9 from the lien with 13 rebounds.
  • Teammate Sammy Allen also earned a spot on the all-tournament team had nine points and ten rebounds, while Morris had 13 points and McPherson had 20 with five triples.
  • The Falcons shot 57. 1 percent in the second half to shoot 50 percent for the game on 32 of 64, while going 7 of 18 from beyond the arc and 16 of 27 from the line (.593).
  • UTPB had 50 rebounds, outrebounding WT by a season-high 25 margin and 18-4 on the offensive end, but 17 turnovers favored WT into a 17-5 lead in points off turnovers.
  • WT head coach Tom Brown improved to 95-34 at WT, while he now is 4-2 all-time against UTPB.

  • The Buffs learned they are the No. 4-seed in the Elite Eight and will face No. 5-seed Le Moyne College at time to be determined on Tues., Mar. 20 in the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
