  • The Lead: Led by a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds from junior Ryan Quaid, the No. 11 West Texas A&M men's basketball team had five players in double figures winning 87-73 over No. 24 Le Moyne College (N.Y.) in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 NCAA Division II Men's Elite Eight.  The Buffs, playing in their second Elite Eight in school history, advance to the Final Four for the first time in program history.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • WT made its last six field goals for a 16-11 lead with 12:12 left in the first half and got the charge call, followed by fourth triple of the game and first from freshman CJ Jennings for a 19-11 lead.
  • An "and one" for the Dolphins pulled Le Moyne within 19-14 with 11:27 left in the first half.
  • Robert Jones III buried a triple for Le Moyne and a 19-17 deficit for the first triple of the game and an 8-0 run tying the game at 19 with 10:06 left.
  • Sophomore Drew Evans buried two free throws, as he hadn't played since the Lone Star Conference Tournament for a 21-19 lead with nine minutes and change left in the half.
  • Senior David Chavlovich scored in the paint ending a 4:20 scoring drought by the Buffs for a 27-24 lead with seven minutes left in the half.
  • Junior Ryan Quaid ended a 1-8 drought with a nice drive to the bucket and a 29-27 lead with five minutes left in the half for his 14th point of the game.
  • Senior Jordan Evans buried a triple with 20 seconds left, but Tanner Hyland hit a triple at the buzzer for a 40-38 Le Moyne lead at halftime.
  • WT opened the second half with a 10-6 run capped with a reverse layup from Chavlovich and a timeout by the Dolphins with WT leading 48-45 with 16:53 left.The Buffs used two key triples and the Chavlovich layup during the spurt.
  • Triples from sophomore Jordan Collins and Evans pushed the lead to a game-high nine and an 8-0 run as Le Moyne called its second timeout of the half with 14:43 left trailing 57-48.
  • Freshman Gaige Prim scored his first bucket of the game inside for a 59-48 lead with 13:27 left extending the run to 10-0, but a bucket from Le Moyne ended the run for a 59-50 lead.
  • An "and one" cut the WT lead to 59-53 with 12 minutes left.
  • Two free throws from Daniel Kaigler cut the WT lead to 59-55 out of the second media timeout and a 7-0 run by the Dolphins, but junior Austin, Minnesota, native ended a two-minute scoring drought by the Buffs with the old fashion triple pushing the lead to 62-55 with 11:15 left.
  • Le Moyne entered the game allowing just 62 points per game this season, ranking fourth nationally.
  • A great ally-oop from Chavlovich to D. Evans pushed the lead to 11 with just over six minutes left at 70-59 and two free throws from Jennings pushed the lead to 72-59, followed by a triple in the corner from J. Evans for a 75-59 lead with five minutes left.
  • Off a big offensive rebound with under four minutes left, Quaid scored inside for his 21st point of the game and a77-63 lead.
  • Tyquan Rolon hit a triple and timeout by the Dolphins for a 77-66 WT lead with 2:44 left.
  • A perfect 8 for 8 from the line by the Buffs in the final 2:44 kept the lead in double digits and the 87-73 margin.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs shot and even 50 percent from the field on 12 of 24 for the half, while going 7 of 13 from beyond the arc (.540) and 7 of 8 from the line.WT outscored Le Moyne 49-33 in the second stanza after the Buffs trailed at halftime for just the sixth time all season (40-38).
  • Le Moyne went 16 of 29 from the field for a .550 clip, while going 4 of 10 from range and 4 of 5 from the line.
  • Quaid had a game-high 14 points on 4 of 5 from the field with one triple and 5 of 6 from the line to lead all scorers, while Isaiah Eisendorf had 10 points for the Dolphins.
  • Le Moyne held a 15-12 lead in rebounding, while dominating inside 20-8 as both teams committed six turnovers.
  • It was kind of a tale of two halves for the Buffs as WT shot 53.6 percent in the second half and played lockdown defense holding Le Moyne to 31.6 percent in the second half and 41.8 percent for the game as the Dolphins entered shooting at a 49.1 percent for 20th nationally.
  • Quaid had a career-high 25 points on 8 of 11 with one triple and went 8 of 10 from the line with 10 rebounds for his 16th double-double of the season leading five Buffs in double figures.
  • J. Evans had 15 points all on triples as he was 5 of 8 from range, while Chavlovich scored 14 points with six assists and two steals.
  • D. Evans in his return scored 13 points, a career-best seven rebounds and went a career-best 8 of 8 from the line.
  • WT shot 51.9 percent for the game on 27 of 52, while going 12 of 23 from beyond the arc and 21 of 23 from the line.
  • Le Moyne was 28 of 67 from the field, 7 of 29 from beyond the arc and 10 of 13 from the stripe.Le Moyne held a 35-33 lead in rebounding and a 34-26 lead in points in the paint, but WT countered with a 15-9 lead in points off turnovers, as both committed nine miscues for the game.
  • The 83 point allowed by Le Moyne is the second-highest allowed this season by the Dolphins (92-68 loss to Fairmont State).
  • The win extended WT to a school-best 32-3 record and 11-16 all-time in the NCAA Tournament as the Buffs become the first team from the Lone Star Conference to advance to the Final Four since Tarleton State in 2015.
  • WT is just the third LSC team to win a game in the Elite Eight with the Texans and former member Northeastern State in 2003 who won the national championship.

  • The Buffs now will face the winner of top-seeded Ferris State (Mich.) and No. 8-seed Barry (Fla.) on Thursday at 6 p.m. for a berth in the national championship Saturday at 2 p.m. on CBS Sports.
