No. 8 Buffs Need Overtime for 103-93 Victory at Cameron; Win Fifth-Straight

  • The Lead: Behind two double-doubles from junior Ryan Quaid and freshman Gaige Prim, along with a career-high 21 points from junior Gach Gach, the No. 8 West Texas A&M men's basketball team was pushed to the limit by Cameron, but came away with a 103-93 overtime victory Thursday evening.  The Buffs outscored Cameron 19-9 in the overtime period and opened the session scoring the first 12 points.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Reigning Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week, senior David Chavloivch, scored five of the Buffs' first seven points with a triple and a pair of free throws for a 7-6 lead with 15:44 left in the first half.
  • Chavlovich continued to the hot start with a layup and a triple for a 7-0 run and a 14-8 lead with 13:10 left in the half, giving him 10 points early.
  • A triple from senior Jordan Evans, his second of the game and 90th of the season, earned him the "and one" for a 31-25 WT lead with 6:30 left in the first half.
  • Chavlovich scored his 12th point of the game in transition for a 34-28 lead with 5:17 left in the half, but had to sit with his second foul at the other end.
  • Cameron drained its fifth triple of the game in 12 total buckets at the other end pulling back within three at 34-31.WT opened the game with six triples in 11 buckets.
  • Evans drained his third trifecta of the half for a 39-32 lead matching the Buffs' largest lead of the half as WT made its last seven field goals.
  • Reigning LSC Defensive Player of the Week freshman Gaige Prim, pulled down his ninth rebound of the half and scored two free throws for a 41-32 lead and another 7-0 run by the Buffs.
  • One free throw from Tyus Momoh ended the run by the Buffs pulling Cameron within 43-33 with 2:13 left in the half.A triple from Tyler Williams ended an over three minute scoring drought by the Aggies.
  • The Buffs were fouled after a three pointer from junior Gach Gach as junior Ryan Quaid made two free throws pushing the lead back to 12 at 48-36 with 1:07 left in the half and the unique five-point trip.
  • A triple, then a steal and layup from Cameron pulled the Aggies within 48-41 at intermission as CU scored five points in the final 20 seconds.
  • The Buffs began the second half careless with the basketball as they committed four turnovers through the first four minutes of the half.
  • Prim earned his tenth rebound and was fouled with 12:29 left making both tosses for a 61-55 lead and nine points.
  • Gach buried his fourth triple off a nice crosscourt pass from senior Rylan Gerber pushing the lead to nine at 64-55.
  • Prim scored inside from a nice lob from Chavlovich ending a 3:24 scoreless drought and a 69-60 lead with eight minutes left, but Momoh answered with a triple at the other end keeping Cameron within striking distance.
  • JV Long hit his first triple of the game for a 69-66 WT lead and then a jumper in the paint from Chavlovich pushed the lead to five at 71-66 with 6:40 left.
  • With the shot clock winding down, freshman CJ Jennings buried a triple for a 78-71 lead and 4:15 left.Chavlovich hit a jumper for an 80-71 lead, but a technical foul on Chavlovich gave CU two free throws and cut the deficit back to seven at 80-75 with 3:30 left.
  • Long cut the WT lead to three with a layup with 2:40 left.
  • Quaid made one of two free throws for an 84-77 lead with 1:50 left, but a triple from Delano Jones pulled Cameron within 84-80.
  • A turnover, steal and score cut the WT lead to 84-82 and then an offensive foul gave Cameron the ball with 30 seconds left.
  • Long scored inside to tie the game with 23 seconds remaining.
  • Gach had a look at a triple and CU got the ball back with one second left in regulation as the game went into overtime for the second-straight year in Lawton.
  • Prim scored the first bucket in overtime for a double-double, his second straight and seventh of the season.Following a jump ball, Quaid scored inside for an 88-84 lead and Evans buried his fifth triple of the game for a 91-84 lead for a 7-0 start to the overtime period with 2:49 left.
  • Jones hit a triple for Cameron with 1:41 left for its first make in the overtime and a 91-87 WT lead, but Cameron called a timeout with no timeouts left, resulting in a technical foul.Evans made both free throws for a 93-87 lead and the ball.
  • Quaid hit one of two free throws and then a Cameron turnover gave WT the ball back up 94-87 with 1:03 left.Quaid hit one free throw again and Prim came up with his 13th rebound and foul making two free throws for a 97-87 lead.
  • Jones hit a triple at the other end for a 97-90 score with 49 seconds left.
  • The Buffs made the free throws in the final minute for the 103-93 win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Chavlovich led all-scores with 12 points on four of nine from the field with two triples and two free throws, but only played 12 minutes in the half as he was saddled with two fouls.
  • Evans had 10 points on three triples and a free throw, while Gach added eight points and Prim had seven points and nine rebounds.
  • The Buffs shot 43 percent on 13 of 30 from the field, while going eight of 20 from beyond the arc and 14 of 15 from the line.
  • Cameron had eight points from Williams to lead the Aggies, while CU shot 15 of 31 from the field for 48.4 percent and were seven of 15 from beyond the arc, while going just four of six from the line.
  • WT held a 24-12 lead in rebounds, including 8-2 on the offensive end for an 11-2 lead in second chance points.
  • In a wild game and the second-straight overtime game in Lawton, the Buffs improved to 4-1 all-time against Cameron in overtime games.
  • Gach finished five of nine from the field with four triples, seven of eight from the line and nine rebounds for 21 points.He had three blocks, including a key rejection in overtime after a turnover and steal thwarting a layup attempt by the Aggies.
  • Chavlovich scored 21 points on eight of 18 from the field with three triples and two free throws before fouling out.
  • Quaid scored 16 points on three of five from the field, along with a career-high 10 of 14 from the line with 12 rebounds for his team-leading 12th double-double of the season.
  • Prim added 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while going 10 of 12 from the line as the two WT big men recorded 27 rebounds, while Cameron had 34 rebounds for the game.
  • Evans added 18 points on five triples and three free throws.
  • As a team, the Buffs shot 43.3 percent on 26 of 60 from the field, while going 14 of 37 from beyond the arc and a season-high 37 of 46 from the line.
  • WT recorded 54 rebounds in the game, including 16 on the offensive end as it posted a 54-34 lead in rebounding making the biggest rebounding margin of the season as WT held a 19 rebound advantage in the first meeting with Cameron.
  • Long had a game-high 22 points for the Aggies as he was held to just six points at halftime.Long went nine of 13 from the field with two triples and two free throws.
  • The Aggies went 32 of 77 from the field for 41.6 percent, but were just three of 16 from the field and three of 14 from beyond the arc in the overtime period.Cameron made a season-high 16 triples against WT on 16 of 40, while going 13 of 21 from the line.
  • WT won its fifth-straight game and improved to 35-15 all-time against Cameron.
