  • The Lead: The No. 8 West Texas A&M men's basketball team ran its winning streak to six games with an 87-58 road thrashing of Midwestern State Saturday afternoon giving WT its first win at D.L. Ligon Coliseum since 2008 and second overall win since 2005. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Buffs, who were playing without all-time leading scorer David Chavloivch who sat out the game due to being suspended one game for the Lone Star Conference technical foul policy, saw every Buff step up big time as four players were in double figures led by senior Jordan Evans with a game-high 19 points.
  • Junior Ryan Quaid added 17 points and nine rebounds, while junior Gach Gach had 14 points with four triples and sophomore Drew Evans added 12 points off the bench.
  • Quaid broke a tie game with the first of his career-high three triples for an 11-8 lead with 16:30 left in the first half.He was a perfect 3 for 3 from beyond the arc and 4 of 4 from the line in the game, while going 5 of 12 from the field and six assists.
  • WT kept between a 3-5 point lead for much of the half, until a jumper from J. Evans gave WT a 32-26 lead with 6:12 left in the half.
  • From there, WT closed the half on a commanding 24-5 run for a 54-31 lead at halftime capped on a long triple from sophomore CJ Jennings at the buzzer.
  • MSU showed some signs of life early in the second half cutting the deficit to under 20, sophomore Jordan Collins answered with a triple as MSU got no closer than 20 the rest of the game.
  • A triple from J. Evans pushed the lead to over 30 with just over six minutes left at 78-46 as the Buffs went on for the 29-point win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the half, WT shot 15 of 34 from the field and went an impressive 10 of 19 from beyond the arc, while draining 14 of 15 free throws.
  • The Buffs held a 27-19 lead in rebounding as all four Buffs who had double figures for the game were in double figures in the first half.
  • The Buff "D" held MSU to just 11 of 36 from the field for a .306 percentage, while MSU went just 3 of 8 from beyond the arc and went to the line nine times making six.
  • MSU leading scorer Brandon Neel had 15 points in the first half, while Josh Huntley had 10 off the bench.
  • The win gave WT a 38-32 lead all-time in the series and was just the ninth win in Wichita Falls in 30 meetings there (9-21).
  • WT won its last two games in Wichita Falls in 2005 and 2008 both in overtime and the 2008 season was the last time WT swept the Mustangs in a regular season series.
  • The win Saturday marked the third-straight win for WT in the series and the third-straight game of scoring 80 or more points in the series.
  • The 58 points allowed by WT was the fewest to Midwestern State since holding it to 55 in a 55-42 loss on Feb. 6, 2013 in Canyon.The year before WT held MSU to 56 points in a 60-56 win in Canyon for the fewest since in a WT victory.
  • For the game, WT shot 43.3 percent on 26 of 60, while going 16 of 32 from beyond the arc for a .500 clip and were 19 of 21 from the line for a .905 average.
  • The Buffs held a 46-32 lead in rebounding
  • MSU shot just 36.1 percent for the game on 22 of 61.The Mustangs were 4 of 13 from beyond the arc and 10 of 17 from the line.
  • Neel had 17 points for the Mustangs to lead the team, while Huntley had 12 off the bench.Teammate Devante Pullum, who had 24 points in the meeting in Canyon, had just two points Saturday, scoring his only bucket late the contest.
  • WT takes a commanding 9-4 lead in the Highway 287 Challenge Series with Midwestern State.
