  • The Lead: The No. 8 West Texas A&M Buffs had six players in double figures led by 15 points from freshman CJ Jennings en route to an 88-60 victory over visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville Thursday evening for the Buffs' seventh-straight victory. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • WT came out firing on all cylinders and never trailed in the contest as junior Gach Gach set the tone from deep early with a triple for the first score of the game, followed by a triple from Jennings – his first of four tying his career-high and a 6-3 lead.
  • Senior David Chavlovich broke an 8-8 tie with a triple and, later, four consecutive triples by the Buffs pushed the lead to 27-15 with 9:56 left and a 12-0 run.
  • Jennings then hit his fourth triple of the half for a 39-22 lead with 5:07 left in the half in the midst of a 28-8 run and a 45-23 lead with 3:25 left on a jumper from junior Ryan Quaid.
  • TAMUK cut the deficit back to 16 late in the half, but free throws from senior Jordan Evans and Jennings pushed the lead to 19 at 48-29 at intermission.
  • The Javelinas quickly cut the deficit to 15 early in the second half on a jumper from Trey Sumpter for a 54-39 lead with 16:23 left
  • WT turned the favor as it went on a 7-0 run capped with another triple from Collins for a 61-39 lead with 14:33 remaining.
  • A triple from senior Jordan Evans – his first field goal of the game, gave WT a 22-point lead with 9:17 left at 70-48.
  • Will West pulled TAMUK within 18 at 73-55 with a bucket in the paint, but it would be as close as it would get as WT closed the game on a 15-5 run over the final 6:47 for the 88-60 win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs shot 54.8 percent in the first half on 17 of 31, while going 9 of 16 from beyond the arc and 5 of 7 from the line.
  • Jennings had 15 points in the first half on 5 of 6 from the field with four triples as the lone player in double figures.
  • WT held TAMUK to just 7 of 23 from the field, 5 of 11 from beyond the arc and the Javelinas were 10 of 14 from the line.
  • The Buffs held an 18-15 lead in rebounding, while leading 14-4 in the paint and 9-0 in points off turnovers as WT forced six miscues, while committing just three.
  • The Buffs shot 30 of 60 from the field for an even 50 percent marking the first time WT had shot 50 percent or better since going 50.7 percent from the field against Northern New Mexico on Dec. 30, 2017.
  • The Buffs drained 14 triples in the game in 33 attempts as it marked the seventh-straight game of double-digit 3-pointers made, while WT went 14 of 19 from the line.
  • Freshman Gaige Prim had seven rebounds along with Evans, while Jennings went 5 of 9 from the field with four triples and 15 points.Gach added 13 points, while Chavlovich chipped in 11 and sophomore Drew Evans and Collins each added 10 off the bench.
  • WT held a 28-16 lead in points in the paint, while leading 15-6 in points off turnovers as WT committed just ten turnovers for the game, while forcing 17 by the Javelinas and recording eight steals.
  • The Buffs held a 37-28 lead in rebounding and tied the season-low for offensive rebounds allowed with just five for the Javelinas.
  • Caelan Neal had a game-high 19 points for TAMUK as the Javelinas shot 40.4 percent on 19 of 47, while going 9 of 23 from range and 13 of 20 from the line.

  • The Buffs close out the 2017-18 home regular season schedule Saturday at 4 p.m. in the First United Bank Center against Angelo State for Senior Day.
