Season Stats

THE BASICS:

  • Score: #7 West Texas A&M 66, Texas A&M-Commerce 67

  • Records: West Texas A&M 24-3 (14-3 LSC), Texas A&M-Commerce 19-7 (11-6 LSC)

  • Location: Commerce, Texas (The Field House)

  • The Lead: West Texas A&M senior Jordan Evans had a great look at a triple at the buzzer, but it hit off the iron as Texas A&M-Commerce upset the No. 7-ranked Buffs 67-66 Thursday evening as the Buffs' league-leading eight-game winning streak came to an end.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • WT scored the first four points of the game, but the Lions then went on a 12-0 run for a 12-4 lead on a layup from Joseph Williams-Powell.
  • Freshman Gaige Prim ended a long drought by the Buffs for a 12-6 score, but the Lions extended the lead back to ten at 16-6 on a steal and dunk from Daquane Willford with 11:33 left.
  • From there, the Buffs continued to chip away at the deficit beginning with a jumper from senior David Chavloivch, followed by a triple from him for a 16-11 deficit.
  • Later, Prim scored inside cutting the deficit to 18-14 with 8:14 left in the half and two free throws from junior Gach Gach pulled the Buffs within 21-19 with 5:39 left in the half.
  • Senior Jordan Evans buried a triple cutting the deficit to 23-22 with 4:55 remaining,
  • An "and one" from Chavlovich tied the game at 27, but TAMUC's Reggie Reid hit a triple at the other end with 1:43 left in the half.
  • Off an offensive rebound, freshman CJ Jennings buried a triple in the corner for a 31-30 WT lead marking the first lead for the Buffs since early in the game.
  • The Lions answered at the other end for a triple from Willie Rooks and a 33-31 lead at halftime.
  • TAMUC scored the first four points of the second half, pushing the lead back to six, as the Buffs' scoring struggles continued and Aaron Horne burned a triple for a 40-31 deficit with just over 18 minutes left and a 7-0 run to start the half.
  • Following a bucket from Jennings, Trey Conrod scored his first triple of the game matching the Lions' biggest lead of the game, but Chavlovich answered at the other end for his second triple of the game cutting the deficit back to seven with 16:21 left at 43-36.
  • Another triple from the Lions pushed the lead back to ten at 46-36 through the first media timeout.
  • A driving layup from Prim pulled WT within 52-45 and a steal from Prim gave the ball back to WT with 11:07 left.
  • An offensive rebound and put back from Prim cut the deficit to 54-51 with 8:50 remaining.  Following another miss from TAMUC, Jennings scored inside on a spin move and a timeout by TAMUC as WT cut the deficit back to one at 54-53 with 7:47 left.
  • A bucket from junior Ryan Quaid inside for his first bucket of the night gave WT its first lead of the second half at 55-54 with 7:03 remaining.  Again the lead was short lived, as Rooks buried a triple – his third of the game on the ensuing possession for a 57-55 TAMUC lead with just over six minutes left.
  • Quaid scored inside cutting the deficit back to three with less than four minutes remaining and sophomore Drew Evans buried a triple tying the game at 62, but Rooks answered with a triple with 2:30 left.
  • Chavlovich hit two free throws with 1:36 left pulling WT within 65-64, but a layup inside with less than a minute left from Williams-Powell put TAMUC back up three at 67-64.  Out of a timeout, Quaid scored inside with 50 seconds left and back to a one-point deficit, as it was the first made field goal by the Buffs in just under three minutes.
  • Two offensive rebounds by the Lions followed by a strip steal from Chavlovich as he went coast-to-coast with a lot of contact in transition with 9.1 seconds left missing the shot and foul by the Buffs.
  • TAMUC, out of a timeout, with WT needing to foul, Chavlovich fouled without any time coming off the clock for the seventh foul of the half.
  • Dorian Armstrong missed the free throw and Evans had a great open look at a three at the buzzer that went off the iron.
