  • The Lead: In a total team effort, the No. 7 West Texas A&M men's basketball team pulled out a hard-fought 82-76 victory at Tarleton State Saturday afternoon for the first outright Lone Star Conference regular season title since 1994.  Four Buffs were in double figures led by 24 points from senior David Chavlovich.  The Buffs earned their first win in Stephenville since Jan. 24, 2009. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Back-to-back triples from senior David Chavlovich, broke open a close game early as WT used an 8-0 run for a 15-7 lead with 13:34 left and a timeout by the Texans.
  • Later, junior Gach Gach buried a triple for an 18-9 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half, but TSU cut the deficit to five with a pair of free throws from Jaraan Lands.
  • WT then used another run – this time a 6-0 run capped with a tip-in from freshman Gaige Prim, for a 24-13 lead, with 9:02 left.
  • Chavlovich scored inside for a 29-21 lead with five minutes left in the half and senior Jordan Evans pushed the lead back to double digits with a layup with 3:49 left.
  • From there, fouls started to mount for the Buffs, including two block out foul calls on made free throws as Tarleton State went to the free throw line 12 times in the final three minutes, making ten as the Texans battled all the way back, cutting the deficit to 31-30 with 1:59 left.
  • The Buffs kept their composure as junior Ryan Quaid had a dunk inside and scored on the final play of the half for a 35-31 lead at intermission.
  • A triple and foul, along with a dunk gave TSU its first lead since early in the game at 37-35 with 18:30 left, but the Buffs responded with a bucket inside to tie it at 37 with 17:58 left.
  • Leading 44-42 with 13:37 left in the second half, Quaid went to the line for the Buffs' third and fourth attempts of the game, making one for a 45-42 lead.
  • Off an offensive rebound by Riddick, he buried a triple for a tie game, but Prim answered at the other end with a bucket in the paint for a 47-45 lead.
  • Prim earned the "and one" for a 51-49 lead with 10:30 left, missing the freebie.
  • Ramsey gave Tarleton State a 52-51 lead at the other end.
  • A big triple from sophomore Drew Evans tied the game at 54 with nine minutes left and followed with another triple for a 59-54 lead with eight minutes left.
  • Out of the eight-minute media timeout, Quaid scored inside off the seventh assist from Chavlovich for a 61-54 lead and a 10-2 run.
  • In transition, Preston Enloe cut the WT lead to 63-61 with five minutes left and a layup in transition tied the game at 63 with just under five minutes left.
  • Quaid came up with a layup inside and a 65-63 lead with 4:29 left.
  • Lands earned the "and one" putting TSU up 66-65 with four minutes left, but Prim answered at the other end with a foul putting WT up 68-66 with the freebie and 3:47 left.
  • Gach broke a 68-68 tie with 3:11 left and a runner in the lane for his first bucket of the half and Chavlovich hit one of two free throws at the other end for a 71-68 lead with 2:30 left.
  • Chavlovich put WT back up four at 73-69 with 1:59 left and driving layup, but Ramsey hit a triple on a loose ball pulling TSU within 73-72 and 1:44 remaining for his game-high 21st point of the game and fourth triple.
  • A long triple from Chavlovich put WT back up four with 90 seconds left give him 20 for the game and senior Jordan Evans came up with a huge rebound with 57 seconds left and foul.Evans made both free throw for his first two points of the game.
  • Ramsey hit his fifth triple of the game – off balance for a 78-75 lead and 46 seconds left.
  • Running the shot clock down, Chavlovich drove the lane for a reverse layup and an 80-75 lead as Land hit one free throw and an immediate foul from TSU.Chavlovich hit two free throws for an 82-76 lead
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the half, WT shot 48.3 percent on 14 of 29 from the field, while going 5 of 16 from beyond the arc and 2 of 2 from the line.
  • Tarleton State went just 6 of 17 from the field and 2 of 9 from the line, but made of for it going 17 of 20 from the line to stay in the contest.
  • Chavlovich had a game-high ten points in the first half on 3 of 8 from the field with two triples and two free throws, along with four assists.
  • Corinthian Ramsey had nine points for the Texans with two triples, while Deshawn Riddick was 8 of 9 from the line and 0 of 3 from beyond the arc and the field.
  • WT dominated inside outscoring TSU 18-2, while leading 12-7 in points off turnovers.
  • Tarleton State didn't make a field goal in the final 7:34 of the first half and cut a ten-point deficit to one all at the free throw line.
  • For the game Chavlovich had a team-high 24 points on 6 of 17 from the field and five of 12 from beyond the arc – no bigger than the last one, while going 7 of 9 from the line leading four Buffs in double figures.
  • Quaid added 18 points and eight rebounds on 8 of 11 from the field with one triple, while Prim added 17 points and five rebounds off the bench as he went 7 of 9 from the field and Gach chipped in 11.
  • Ramsey had 24 points for the Texans with five triples and six made field goals, while going 7 of 9 from the line.Land went 13 of 17 from the line for 17 points as the Buffs also were 13 of 17 from the line.
  • Riddick had 18 points on three triples and 9 of 11 from the line.
  • WT outrebounded TSU 34-27 as the Buffs shot 30 of 57 from the field (.526) and 9 of 28 from beyond the arc (.321) and 13 of 17 from the line.
  • TSU shot 17 of 42 from the field (.405) and 9 of 23 from beyond the arc, while going 33 of 41 from the line.
  • WT improved to 26-28 all-time against TSU and won its eighth game all-time there (8-16).
  • The Buffs had lost their last eight meetings in Stephenville.

  • The Buffs will head to Frisco, Texas, for the 2018 Lone Star Conference Championship as the top-seed where it will play No. 8-seed Eastern New Mexico on Friday, Mar. 2, at 8;30 p.m. at Dr Pepper Arena.
