Season Stats

THE BASICS:

  • Score: #1 West Texas A&M 86, #8 Eastern New Mexico 70

  • Records: West Texas A&M 26-3, Eastern New Mexico 11-17

  • Location: Denton, Texas (Kitty Magee Arena)

  • The Lead: A blistering 46-16 first half and double-doubles from juniors Gach Gach and Ryan Quaid sparked the top-seeded West Texas A&M Buffs to an 86-70 victory in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Lone Star Conference Championship Friday evening.  Senior Jordan Evans paced the team with 20 points and four triples.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Having to change venues to Texas Woman's University due to a facility issue at Dr Pepper Arena yesterday, didn't stop the Buffs from absolutely dominating from the get go as they raced out to a 22-4 lead and a 17-1 run during the spurt capped with a pair of free throws from Evans with 11:50 left in the first half.
  • WT began the game 8 of 16 from the field, while ENMU was just 1 of 12.
  • Evans buried two more free throws for a 24-6 lead with 10:09 left in the half.
  • ENMU's Zach Parker buried a triple for just the third field goal of the half for the Greyhounds and a 24-9 deficit with 9:46 left in the first period.
  • A triple from senior David Chavlovich pushed the WT lead to 30-9 with 8:01 left, and freshman Gaige Prim found easy sledding inside for a bucket and a 32-9 lead with 7:29 left.
  • Sophomore Jordan Collins got into the act from deep with a triple for a 37-11 lead and Chavlovich drained a triple with six seconds left for 46-16 lead at intermission.
  • ENMU came out of the gates in the second half and almost matched its output from the first half in the first five minutes as the Greyhounds opened with a 12-2 run and a layup from Jamani Pierce pulled ENMU within 50-30 with 15:14 left and a 14-4 run.
  • ENMU pulled within 19 points on a pair of free throws form Lamarquis Thompson at 55-36 with 12:55 left, but the Buffs quickly pushed the lead back to 27 on a layup from Gach with 10:37 left at 63-36.
  • Just as the Buffs had big runs in the first half, the Greyhounds answered in the second as a 13-6 run followed pulling ENMU within 20 once again at 69-49.
  • After WT had pushed the lead back to 25, ENMU would go on a run once again Parker pulled the Greyhounds within 17 with a triple with 4:15 left capping a 10-2 run.He would make two free throws puling the team within 14 at 80-66, but it would be as close as the Greyhounds would get as WT settled for the 86-70 win.

  • WT led in rebounding 49-40 in rebounding, but ENMU led 19-8 in points off turnovers as the Buffs committed 11 miscues to nine for the Greyhounds. WT dominated inside, 34-22 in points in the paint.
  • Head coach Tom Brown won his 90th game at the helm of the Buffs (90-34) and his first game at the Lone Star Conference Tournament since he became head coach in 2014-15.
  • WT improved to 33-19 all-time in the LSC Championship and the win marked the first for the Buffs since a 65-50 win over Cameron in the first round in 2012-13.
