  • The Lead: The No. 13-ranked and top-seeded West Texas A&M men's basketball team  had four players in double figures as it posted a 73-63 victory in the 2018 Lone Star Conference semifinal Saturday evening over No. 4-seed Texas A&M-Commerce advancing to the Buffs' first LSC title game since 2006. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Both teams struggled early out of the gates as through the first media timeout TAMUC was 2 of 8 and the Buffs were 2 of 5 with the score tied at four.
  • TAMUC took a 7-4 lead, but a dunk from junior Ryan Quaid pulled the Buffs within 7-6 with 13:34 left and a steal and layup from senior David Chavlovich and a triple from freshman CJ Jennings gave WT an 11-7 lead with 12:37 left in the half on a 7-0 run.
  • The Lions started 3 of 14 from the field, while WT was 5 of 11 as TAMUC was just 1 of 8 from beyond the arc to start the game.
  • TAMUC pulled within 17-14 as WT went cold for a 2:46 drought with 7:09 left in the half.
  • Chavlovich had the answer as he ended an almost four-minute drought with a bucket and an 18-16 lead with 5:27 left in the half.
  • The Lions tied the game at 18 with 4:50 left as WT went just 1 of its last 7 and committed five turnovers over the last 5:05.
  • Willie Rooks gave TAMUC the lead at 20-18 with 4:09 left off the seventh offensive rebound by the Lions.
  • Chavlovich answered for his sixth point at 3:19 for a 20-20 score.
  • TAMUC took the lead once again at 24-22, but Quaid buried a triple just before the buzzer for a 25-24 WT lead at intermission.
  • The Buffs used a 7-0 run early in the second half for a 24-28 lead with 16:11 left as junior Ryan Quaid pulled down his eighth rebound with a bucket from freshman Gaige Prim for a 38-26 lead with 15:11 left extending the run to 9-0 as the Buffs made their last five field goals.
  • Senior Jordan Evans buried his first triple of the game and extended the run to 12-2 over the last 3:58 for a 39-30 lead with 13:28 left.
  • A technical foul on freshman Gaige Prim gave TAMUC free throws as the Lions pulled within 39-33 moments later.
  • Both teams went cold once again as Chavlovich ended a long drought with a pair of free thows for a 41-33 lead with 10:46 left.
  • TAMUC quickly cut deficit to four at 41-37, extending WT's drought to over five minutes, but junior Gach Gach ended the drought with a bucket and Jennings pushed the lead to eight at 45-37 with 9:21 left and a timeout by the Lions.
  • WT extended the lead to double-digits, but a triple from the Lions – just the third of the game, pulled the team within 55-48 with 4:24 left.
  • Evans answered at the other end with a trey as TAMUC would get no closer the rest of the way with WT winning 73-63.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the half, WT shot 11 of 29 from the field for 37.9 percent, but was just 3 of 12 from beyond the arc and didn't attempt a free throw in the half for the first time all season.
  • The 25 points by the Buffs was a season-low for the first half, but Jennings had a team-high eight points with two triples in the half, while Chavlovich has six points, three assists and three steals.
  • Both teams had 21 rebounds in the half as TAMUC held an 8-5 lead in offensive rebounds, while holding a 20-8 lead in points in the paint and an 8-0 lead in second chance points.
  • Reggie Reid and Trey Conrod each had six points for the Lions in the half.
  • TAMUC shot just 11 of 33 from the field and were 1 of 13 from beyond the arc, while going 1 of 3 from the line.
  • Chavlovich finished with a team-high 23 points on 8 of 18, but went just 1 of 7 from beyond the arc and 6of 7 from the line with seven rebounds, six assists and three steals leading four Buffs in double figures.
  • Quaid tallied his league-leading 14th double-double of the season, second in as many nights and 20th of his career with 13 points and 11 rebounds, including ten defensive rebounds, going 6 of 11 from the field with the big triple.
  • Evans added 13 points with two triples and Jennings chipped in ten points and two triples.
  • The Buffs shot 44.3 percent and an even 50 percent in the second half to pull away on 27 of 61 for the game, while the team struggled from range at 6 of 22, but went 13 of 14 from the line.WT entered averaging a league-best 12 made triples per game.
  • WT dominated the glass in the second half as it recorded 25 rebounds to just 12 for the Lions for a 46-33 lead on the boards.The Buffs committed 14 turnovers to 11 for the Lions.
  • TAMUC shot 38.7 percent for the game on 24 of 62, while going just 4 of 25 from range and 11 of 19 from the line.
  • Reid had a game-high 26 points on 9 of 18 from the field, but was 1 of 7 from beyond the arc and 7 of 12 from the line.Rooks was the only other player in double figures with 11 points and two triples.
  • WT improved to 34-19 in the LSC Tournament overall and are now 53-32 all-time against TAMUC.
  • The Buffs advanced to their league-leading 12th LSC Championship game.
  • Chavlovich's 23 points puts him 29 points from tying the LSC all-time scoring record of 2,380 points.
  • WT is 6-5 all-time in the championship game of the LSC Tournament.

  • The Buffs will battle another rubber-match foe in No. 2-seed UT Permian Basin Sunday at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN3 for the 2018 Lone Star Conference Championship.
