CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M Athletics announced Monday that Under Armour, Inc., the Baltimore, Md.-based leader in performance apparel, footwear and accessories, will become the official outfitter for all athletic teams. Cardinal's Sports Center, based in Lubbock, will serve as the primary dealer of all Under Armour products to the university.
"It became clear from day one of this process that Under Armour had a strong desire to be the official uniform for West Texas A&M University," Director of Athletics
Michael McBroom said. "This was reciprocated by our coaches and student-athletes. Under Armour's innovative and scientific approach to uniforms and practice apparel will help our teams and student-athletes achieve their athletic goals. Further, Cardinal's provides us with great experience in both the team business and consumer retailing, which we intend to leverage with direct sales of official team merchandise to our alumni and fan base."
The seven-year agreement gives Under Armour the exclusive right to supply uniforms, apparel, footwear, and accessories to 17 varsity sports as well as all members of the cheer squad, pep band, coaches and administrative staff. Under Armour will also be the exclusive brand for the Buffalo Club and the T-Club Letterwinners Association. The deal will begin with the 2018-19 season and includes additional fundraising, brand engagement and marketing opportunities. WT Athletics retains an option to extend the deal for an additional three years.
"Cardinal's Sport Center is excited about the opportunity to partner with Under Armour to outfit West Texas A&M Athletics," John Cardinal said. "Cardinal's has a long history with WT and we are excited to help usher in this new era for West Texas A&M Athletics."
Cardinal's Sports Center founder, John Cardinal, was a two-time letterman for the WT football team in 1948 and 1949.
West Texas A&M joins the growing Under Armour roster of NCAA partners that includes the University of Wisconsin, University of Notre Dame, Naval Academy Athletic Association, University of Maryland, Texas Tech University, Northwestern University, University of Cincinnati, Boston College, University of Utah, University of South Carolina and Auburn University.
The new official outfitter agreement includes marketing entitlement that will complement Under Armour's brand marketing campaigns through print and venue presence at the University.
"The university and athletics department are thrilled about the agreement with Under Armour and Cardinal's," WT head football coach
Hunter Hughes said. The theme "Tradition in Motion" begins with the new Buffalo Football Stadium, and the addition of Under Armour. The limits to what we can do with this partnership will be incredible, exciting and beneficial to all sports at West Texas A&M."
Buff and Lady Buff fans will be able to purchase official Under Armour team gear beginning late summer 2018, in time for the start of the fall sports season.
