  • The Lead: The No. 11 West Texas A&M men's basketball team had five players in double figures and two double-doubles en route to a hard-fought 83-76 victory over visiting Midwestern State Thursday evening at the First United Bank Center.  WT won its 28th-straight home game improving to 13-1 overall and 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play.   
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Buffs jumped out to an early 14-3 lead making five of their first six shots in front of 1,575 fans to open the 2018 portion of the schedule.  Senior David Chavlovich scored nine early points during the quick start.
  • Midwestern State cut the deficit to 14-10 with a 7-0 run and later two charity tosses from Trey Kennedy pulled MSU within 18-15 with 12:29 left in the first half.
  • From there, the Buffs rattled off a 13-3 run capped with a triple from sophomore Jordan Collins, who made his first career start in the game.
  • The Mustangs kept fighting and were able to cut the deficit to six twice, but WT settled for the 41-33 lead at halftime.
  • MSU came out of the gates at half and quickly erased the deficit with a 13-4 run capped on a triple from Pullum for the Mustangs' first lead of the game at 46-45 with 16:36 left. 
  • Following the second tie of the game at 50 with 14:41 remaining, an emphatic dunk from junior Ryan Quaid followed as WT never relinquished the lead the rest of the way.
  • WT stretched the lead to six, but the Mustangs cut it back to four followed by a quick 5-0 run for the Buffs and a 62-53 lead with 8:52 left.
  • MSU wouldn't go quietly, however, as it cut the deficit to four three more times with Brandon Neel hitting two free throws and a 67-63 WT lead with 6:48 left.
  • Collins buried his fourth triple of the game as the Buffs capped a 6-0 run and a 75-65 lead with 2:50 left.
  • Nick Powell hit a trey for a 75-70 deficit for the Mustangs with 2:10 left, but Chavlovich had the answer at the other end and freshman CJ Jennings pushed the lead to nine at 79-70 with 1:06 left.
  • WT pushed the lead back to double-digits with two free throws from Chavlovich and settled for the seven-point win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the half, WT shot 46.7 percent on 14 of 30 from the field, while going 6 of 14 from beyond the arc and 7 of 9 from the line. 
  • Chavlovich had 11 points to lead the team on 4 of 5 from the field for the half with a triple and two free throws.  Freshman Gaige Prim had eight points and four rebounds off the bench.
  • MSU went 10 of 30 from the field for the half, while shooting 4 of 10 from beyond the arc and 9 of 10 from the line. 
  • Devante Pullum had a game-high 14 points at half on 5 of 7 from the field with two triples and two free throws.
  • For the game, the Buffs shot 40.3 percent on 27 of 67, but shot just 35.1 percent in the second half on 13 of 37.  WT was 10 of 28 from beyond the arc for the game and 19 of 25 from the line for a 76 percent clip. 
  • Chavlovich and Prim each had 17 points as Prim recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds.  Quaid had 12 points and 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the year. 
  • Senior Jordan Evans and Collins each had 13 points as the Buffs held a 43-39 lead in rebounding. 
  • MSU shot 40.7 percent for the game on 24 of 59 and shot 48.3 percent in the second half on 14 of 29.  The Mustangs went 10 of 22 from beyond the arc and 18 of 26 from the line. 
  • Pullum had a game-high 24 points, while Neel added 16 and Logan Hicks chipped in 10 off the bench. 
  • The win gave WT its 28th-straight at home dating back to the 2015-16 season and WT improved to 37-32 all-time against Midwestern State.
  • WT head coach Tom Brown improved to 3-4 against MSU.
  • The Buffs and Lady Buffs swept MSU on Thursday night improving to 7-4 in the annual Highway 287 Challenge Cup against Midwestern State.  The two teams will play again in Wichita Falls in February.
