  • The Lead: Behind a season-high 16 three-pointers, the No. 10 West Texas A&M men's basketball team downed No. 8 UT Permian Basin 105-86 Tuesday evening in a battle of the top two teams in the Lone Star Conference.  Both teams head into February tied for first in the league standings at 10-2.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • In a highly anticipated rematch in a pair of top ten teams, UTPB took control early, scoring the first five points of the contest, but the Buffs came back with a triple from senior Rylan Gerber and another trifecta from sophomore CJ Jennings with 10:29 left in the first half breaking a 19-19 tie.
  • From there, WT would never trail the rest of the game as Jennings' triple sparked a 7-0 run for a 26-19 lead on a layup inside from freshman Gaige Prim
  • UTPB leader and LSC Preseason Player of the Year, Daeshon Francis cut the WT lead to five on a driving layup, but the Buffs responded with a 13-4 run over the next three minutes capped with a triple from sophomore Jordan Collins with 6:01 left in the half and a 39-25 lead.
  • Collins then hit another triple with 3:33 left for a 47-29 advantage, but UTPB cut the deficit back to 13 at intermission at 51-38, as WT didn't score a field goal the final 3:33 of the half.
  • The Buffs quickly ended the drought in the second half with a jumper from senior David Chavlovich, on the first possession of the half and followed with a triple for a 56-38 lead with 18:15 left.
  • Later, a triple from Amari Bryant cut the WT lead to 65-53 with 14:06 left as the momentum began to shift.However, junior Gach Gach buried a triple for a 70-54 lead with 13:08 left.
  • Two free throws from UTPB leading rebounder Sammy Allen pulled the Falcons within 13 at 77-64 with 10:55 left, but back-to-back triples from Jennings pushed the lead back to 19 and he added two free throws for eight-straight points and a 85-64 lead with 9:44 left.
  • The Buffs built the lead back to 22 on a pair of tosses from Chavlovich with 6:41 left and UTPB's James McPherson cut the deficit to 17 with two free throws followed by a triple with 2:01 left at 101-84.
  • Jennings had an emphatic steal and dunk late for a career-high 16 points as WT won 105-86.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • In the first half, WT shot 17 of 36 from the field for 47.2 percent, doing a lot of their damage from beyond the arc, going 9 of 22, while going 8 of 9 from the line.
  • Prim had a team-high 13 points off the bench on 5 of 8 from the field and 3 of 3 from the line with six rebounds.
  • UTPB went 16 of 34 from the field, 2 of 6 from beyond the arc and 4 of 5 from the line.Francis paced the Falcons with 17 points and six rebounds as he was 7 of 10 from the field and 3 of 3 from the line.
  • 28 of UTPB's 38 points in the half came inside, but WT turned nine miscues into a 16-3 lead in points off turnovers.
  • Chavlovich scored 21 points in the second half, finishing with 26 for the game as he was 6 of 12 from the field, 3 of 7 from beyond the arc and 11 of 12 from the line, while narrowly missing a double-double with nine assists and four steals.
  • Prim finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season as he was 6 of 13 from the field and 6 of 8 from the line with two steals.
  • Senior Jordan Evans moved into second all-time in career triples made as he had four on the night with 15 points and five rebounds.He surpassed Martin Lattibeaudiere (261, 1993-97) for second all-time in school history as Evans now has 263 for his career.Chavlovich leads the school record book with 350 for his career.
  • The Buffs shot 31 of 66 from the field for 47 percent, while going a season-best 16 of 36 from beyond the arc (.444) and 27 of 33 from the line (.818).WT tallied 36 rebounds and had just 12 turnovers and 20 assists with 11 steals.
  • UTPB was led by 26 points from Francis as he scored just nine in the second half.He was 9 of 18 from the field and eight of nine from the line with nine rebounds and six assists.Francis entered the game just four points shy of 1,000 for his historic career as he now has 1,022 points at UTPB.
  • Bryant added 17 points, while McPherson chipped in 18 and Josh Morris had 12 points as four starters were in double figures for the Falcons.
  • UTPB had just eight bench points in the game as starter Sammy Allen was held to just seven points and seven rebounds as he entered the game leading the nation in defensive rebounds at 9.4 per game and total rebounds fifth at 11.7 per game.
  • The Falcons shot 46.9 percent from the field on 30 of 64 from the floor, while going 6 of 14 from beyond the arc and 20 of 25 from the line.UTPB held a 39-36 lead in rebounding, while dominating the paint 48-24.
  • WT held a 27-5 lead in points off turnovers as the Buffs forced 18 miscues by the Falcons.
  • The 105 points marked the fifth time WT has eclipsed the 100-point mark this season and has scored 90 or more points 11 times this year.
  • Head coach Tom Brown won his 84th game at WT (84-33) as the Buff on becoming the first LSC team this season to win his 20th game and marked the third-straight year of 20 or more wins for WT.

  • The Buffs closed out the home stand 4-1 and are 20-2 heading into the final month of the regular season.WT has eight days off before it opens four of the final six games of the season on the road with matchups at Cameron (Feb. 8) and at Midwestern State (Feb. 10).
