  • The Lead: The No. 11 West Texas A&M men's basketball team started strong and never looked back as it tallied a 99-55 victory over visiting Western New Mexico Saturday afternoon.  All 11 players who played for the Buffs scored as four Buffs were in double figures led by a career-high 23 points from sophomore Drew Evans.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Western New Mexico opened the game with a triple from CJ Vanbeekum, but the Buffs responded with a triple at the other end from senior Jordan Evans.
  • The teams traded buckets over the next three possessions as senior David Chavlovich buried a triple for a 10-7 lead for the Buff with 16:43 left in the half.
  • WT wouldn't trail the rest of the half as the Buffs held a 15-9 lead on a triple from sophomore Drew Evans with 14:09 left.
  • From there, the Buffs' "D" stymied the Mustangs and the offense caught fire with a 16-2 run capped on a jumper in the paint from sophomore CJ Jennings with 6:13 left and a 31-11 lead.
  • Evans buried his third triple of the half as WT built the lead again over 20 points at 35-14.
  • Chavloivch hit a triple at the 1:21 mark for a 44-21 as the final points for the half.
  • Since the 15-9 lead with 13:51 left, WT outscored WNMU 29-12.
  • WNMU pulled within 19 points with 17:26 left at 46-27, but WT responded with a 12-1 run capped on a pair of free throws from junior Ryan Quaid for a 55-28 lead with 15 minutes left.
  • The Mustangs again cut the deficit back to 23, but a quick 7-0 run capped with a dunk by Evans in transition pushed the lead to 30 at 62-32 with 12:33 left.
  • Leading 81-50 with 3:44 left, WT closed the game on an 18-5 run as sophomore Wyatt Wheatly, freshman Sterling White got significant playing time down the stretch.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the half, the Buffs shot 16 of 33 from the field for 48.5 percent, while going nine of 22 from beyond the arc (.409), but were just three of eight from the line.
  • Evans had a game-high nine points to that point as eight different Buffs scored in the half.
  • WT held WNMU to just 22.9 percent shooting on eight of 35, while the Mustangs were just one of nine from beyond the arc and four of nine from the line.
  • WNMU held a 27-24 lead in rebounding and 9-3 on the offensive end, but led just 4-3 in second chance points.
  • WT forced eight turnovers in the half and had just three, leading 13-0 in points off turnovers.
  • The Buffs shot 48 percent for the game on 36 of 75, while going 15 of 42 from beyond the arc and 12 of 20 from the line.
  • WT had 51 rebounds, to 50 for the Mustangs, as WNMU was just 16 of 65 from the field for 24.6 percent, while going just three of 23 from beyond the arc and 20 of 33 from the line.
  • Evans was eight of 11 from the field, two of five from beyond the arc and five of five from the line, while Quaid had 15 points and eight rebounds.Evans added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Chavlovich had 12 points on four triples.
  • Jon-Reese Woodson had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Mustangs and Jordan Enriquez added 10 points.Leading scorer Latrell Spivey didn't score in the game nor attempt a field goal as he entered averaging over 12 points per game.
