  • The Lead: Behind a season-high 2,258 fans and a raucous environment, the No. 7 West Texas A&M men's basketball team rebounded for a thrilling 86-82 victory over No. 10 Texas A&M-Commerce in the NCAA Division II Showcase Saturday afternoon.  WT senior David Chavlovich scored a team-high 30 points, while TAMUC's Willie Rooks dropped in a game-high 35 points. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Buffs opened the game with a triple on their first possession from senior Jordan Evans as he had four trifectas in the game.  Rooks drained a triple – his first of four for a 6-5 TAMUC lead with 17:34 left in the first half. 
  • From there, Chavlovich scored inside for a 7-6 lead and then buried a triple for a 10-6 lead as the Buffs built the lead to double-digits twice through the first ten minutes.
  • Two free throws from Daquane Willford pulled the Lions within six at 20-14 with 9:48 left, but the Buffs caught fire as they took the six-point lead and stretched it to 16 capped on a layup from Evans on a 13-2 run with 535 left in the half.
  • TAMUC cut the deficit to six once again, but the Buffs quickly pushed the lead back to double-digits with a triple from sophomore Jordan Collins for a 38-28 lead with 2:43 left.
  • Chavlovich scored with 28 second left in the half for a 42-35 lead and Collins buried a triple from nearly half court at the buzzer for a 45-35 lead.
  • WT stretched the lead to a game-high 21 points opening the second half, going 5 of 8 from the field – all triples for a 58-37 lead capped on a trifecta from freshman CJ Jennings.  A few seconds later, Evans hit a triple for a 61-40 lead matching the game-high 21 points with 16:05 left. 
  • Through the first five minutes of the second half, WT outscored TAMUC 16-7 to start the second half for a 61-42 lead with 15:11 left.
  • Following a layup from Chavlovich pushing the lead back to 21, TAMUC came storming back as the fouls started to mount once again for the Buffs.  The Lions went on a 13-0 run for a 63-55 deficit with 10:39 left capped with a pair of tosses from Rooks. 
  • The Lions continued to trim the deficit to four on a triple from Rooks as TAMUC used a 21-6 run from the 15:11 mark for a 676-3 score with 7:57 left.
  • Evans was fouled and scored two free throws and a bucket from Quaid quickly pushed the lead to eight at 71-63. 
  • Freshman Gaige Prim put the Buffs up eight again on an "and one", but a 6-0 run by the Lions trimmed the lead to two at 76-74 with 3:42 left. 
  • As the shot clock was winding down, Dorian Armstrong buried a triple tying the game at 77 with 2:58 left.  It marked the first tie in the game since the first half.
  • The final 2:58 was played at a great pace as the crowd was into it on every shot and both teams made great plays. 
  • Chavlovich made one of two tosses and junior Gach Gach buried two free throws for an 80-77 lead with 2:13 left, before Armstrong tied it at 80 with another triple.
  • Chavlovich put WT up two with a bucket and Trey Conrod tied the game at 82 with a bucket in the paint with 1:10 left.
  • Chavlovich came up huge once again with the "and one" for an 85-82 lead with 49 seconds left.
  • Rooks had a good look at a triple with 39 seconds left with Quaid pulling down a huge offensive rebound and foul with six seconds left.  Chavlovich made one of two free throws for an 86-82 lead for the final margin.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT shot 43.2 percent for the half on 16 of 37 form the field for the half and went 7 of 21 from beyond the arc, while going 6 of 9 from the line.
  • The Buffs committed 12 fouls in the first half as the Lions stayed in the game on free throw shooting, going 14 of 17 from the line as the Buff "D" held TAMUC to 9 of 30 from the field for 30 percent and 3 of 9 from beyond the arc.
  • Chavlovich had 14 points to lead the Buffs, while Rooks had 15 for the Lions.  Junior Ryan Quaid, who recorded his 11th double-double of the season, had ten points and seven rebounds at half.  He finished with 13 points and 16 rebounds. 
  • For the game, WT shot 40.6 percent on 28 of 69 from the field, while going 12 of 40 from beyond the arc and 18 of 26 from the line. 
  • The Buffs had 42 rebounds and recorded seven blocks in the game, while committing just nine turnovers in the contest.
  • Chavlovich tallied an even 30 points for the game on 9 of 22 with three triples and 9 of 11 from the line, along with six assists.  Quaid went 6 of 10 from the field with a team-high three blocks and the double-double on 13 points and 16 rebounds.  Evans scored 16 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
  • TAMUC had a game-high 35 points from Rooks on 10 of 19 from the field with four triples and he was 11 of 12 from the line.  Reid added 13 points and Armstrong finished with 11.
  • The Lions shot 39.1 percent and 47.1 percent in the second half, going 25 of 64 from the floor for the game and were 7 of 22 from beyond the arc, while going 25 of 31 from the line for an .806 clip.  TAMUC led in rebounding 48-42 as both teams had 18 offensive rebounds in the contenst.
