No. 8 Buffs Escape with 70-69 Victory at Texas A&M-Kingsville for Eighth-Straight Win

  • The Lead: A jumper from West Texas A&M senior David Chavlovich with 3.8 seconds remaining lifted the No. 8 Buffs to a 70-69 win at Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday afternoon.  It marked the eighth-straight win for the Buffs.  Chavlovich finished with a game-high 20 points. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • TAMUK jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Buffs responded with a 9-2 run capped on a jumper from senior David Chavlovich for a 9-6 lead with 15:34 left.
  • A jumper from Jacolby Harris cut the WT lead to 9-8, but the Buffs began a 10-0 run with a triple from Chavloivch and one from sophomore Drew Evans for a 19-8 lead with 10:19 left in the half.
  • TAMUK's Trey Sumpter buried a triple beginning the comeback from the Javelinas as they pulled within 23-19 on an 11-0 run with 6:46 left in the half.
  • The "and one" by Evans pushed the lead back to eight with 5:34 left at 29-21.
  • From there, WT went without a field goal the rest of the half and made six free throws the rest of the half as TAMUK got as close as three, but trailed at intermission 35-31.
  • WT built the lead to 11 once again midway through the second half as Chavlovich buried a triple and was fouled on a triple, hitting all three tosses.
  • A steal and layup from TAMUK pulled the Javelinas within 53-46 with 11:17 left.
  • Both teams went cold for over two minutes, but TAMUK's Robert Stevenson got a dunk, cutting the deficit to one, however, not to be out done, WT senior Jordan Evans buried a triple at the other end for a 60-56 score with 6:36 left.
  • A driving reverse layup from Chavloivch put WT up four at 64-60 with 3:35 left and a timeout by the Buffs.
  • Another "and one" for TAMUK pulled the Javelinas within one, but, following a block, Drew Evans had a putback dunk for a three point lead.TAMUK answered at the other end cutting the deficit to one.
  • Chavlovich had a good look at a triple with less than 90 seconds left, but TAMUK got the board and had a chance at the lead.
  • Two free throws from Stevenson gave TAMUK its first lead since an early 4-0 lead at 67-66 with 41.9 seconds left.
  • Chavlovich scored inside with 32 seconds left putting WT up one, but a foul at the other end gave Cris Boleware two shots putting TAMUK back up one.
  • Chavlovich was fouled and made the bucket with 3.8 seconds left putting WT back up one at 70-69, but missed the free throw.Following timeouts by both teams, Boleware had a driving look at the buzzer, but it hit off the front of the iron as the Buffs escaped with the win.
 
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the half, WT shot 11 of 23 from the field for 47.8 percent, while going 4 of 12 from beyond the arc and 9 of 12 from the line.
  • WT had 18 rebounds in the half, but was killed on the offensive rebounds as TAMUK led 10-3 and held an 11-4 lead in second chance points.
  • Chavlovich, junior Ryan Quaid and Evans each had eight points to lead the team, while
  • TAMUK went 11 of 34 from the field (.324), while going 1 of 9 from beyond the arc and 8 of 11 from the line.The Javelinas had 20 rebounds and held a 10-4 lead in points off turnovers as WT committed seven miscues to five for TAMUK.
  • WT finished the game shooting 42.6 percent on 23 of 54, while going 8 of 23 from beyond the arc (.348) and 16 of 21 from the line (.762).
  • Along with Chavloivch's 20 points, junior Ryan Quaid followed his 21 and 21 performance with his tenth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Drew Evans scored a season-high 12 points off the bench.
  • TAMUK was led by 19 points from Boleware on 4 of 9 from the field with one triple and he was 10 of 11 from the line.Sumpter added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
  • The Javelinas shot 19 of 57 from the field (.333), while going 2 of 16 from range and stayed in the game on 29 of 33 from the line as WT was whistled for 26 fouls in the game, while TAMUK committed 21 fouls.
  • WT committed 13 turnovers in the game as TAMUK held a 19-4 lead in points off turnovers, while WT lead a 39-36 lead in rebounding.
  • The Buffs handed TAMUK its eighth-straight loss of the season, while WT improved to 51-25 all-time against the Javelinas and improved to 14-17 all-time in Kingsville.
  • WT head coach Tom Brown improved to 7-2 all-time against TAMUK.
