  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M men's soccer team tied its season-high in goals with a 5-1 victory over visiting Oklahoma Christian Saturday Afternoon.  In the game, the Buffs scored two first half goals with three in the second for their first Heartland Conference victory of the season.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Oklahoma Christian had its first good look 13:50 into the contest as Anthony Buchanan intercepted a WT pass and dished to Vanja Hodovic who drilled a shot off the post.
  • The Buffs scored their first, first half goal of the season as junior Reece Schattle scored off assists from senior Chris Johnson and freshman Stefan Andjelic at the 34:42 mark.For the score, the Buffs moved the ball up field nicely after a penalty and Schattle scored to the lower corner for a 1-0 lead.
  • OC's Garrett Blume scored with an assist from Buchanan off a throw in for a 1-1 game at the 42:14 mark
  • 46 seconds later, the Buffs regained the momentum as freshman Stefan Andjelic scored off a corner kick rebound from OC goalkeeper Gianluca Marchetti for a 2-1 WT lead.
  • For the half, the Buffs had five shots with three on goal as Schattle led the way with two shots on goal and a score.It was his fourth career score and first of the season.
  • OC had five shots with three on goal as well.Five different Eagles each had shots in the half.
  • WT added its third goal of the game as Johnson found junior Julio Vargs for a long run to the corner and Johnson centered to Vargas for a header and Vargas' second score of the season at the 50:20 mark.
  • Later in the half, junior Troy Reeves was on the receiving end of a set piece kick from senior Rafael Vasconcellos for a 4-1 lead at the 71:44 mark.It was Reeves' second career goal at WT.
  • Vasconcellos got into the act late as he scored off a rebounded save for a 5-1 lead at the 84:28 mark.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs tallied 17 shots with seven on frame in the game as senior Evan Bozman and Schattle each had four shots to lead the team.
  • Johnson had two assists in the game for his first multi-assist game in his career.
  • Five different Buffs scored goals in the game
  • OC had five shots with three on goal and a score in the game
  • WT improved to 8-0 all-time against Oklahoma Christian and 5-0 in Canyon.
