  • The Lead: A second half goal by Texas A&M-International handed West Texas A&M a 1-0 loss Thursday evening at The Pitch.  TAMIU's Elias Perales scored his first goal of the season at the 63:06 mark as the Buffs were held scoreless for the second time in the last three games.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Texas A&M-International had the first good chance as Rafael Montabes belted one off the post at the 13:41 mark into the match as the Buffs were able to clear the rebound away.
  • WT had a chance later in the period, but offsides was called on the Buffs' breakaway ending the threat.
  • Each team didn't have many opportunities in the first half as the game was back-and-forth in the middle of the field mostly.
  • Early in the second half, Montabes had two good looks in transition as Vencel made one save and the second ball sailed just wide.
  • On a breakaway, junior Julio Vargas was taken down for a foul just outside the box as the Buffs got a free kick at the 61:06 mark just outside the box.Junior Troy Reeves hit the crossbar on the free kick for the Buffs' best chance of the game to that point.
  • Following the missed opportunity by the Buffs, TAMIU's Elias Perales streaked down the field on a breakaway and put a shot past Vencel for his first goal of the season and just the third goal by the Dustdevils in just under five games.
  • WT had a good look with a header from junior Reece Schattle, but TAMIU goalkeeper Carlos Herrera was there for the save – the second of the game at the 79:36 mark.
  • Reeves had another free kick from the top of the box, but went high over the net this time at the 81:08 mark.
  • The Buffs valiantly tried to get the equalizer in the final minutes with a pair of good crosses, but were unable to score.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Each team had three shots with TAMIU having one on frame in the first half.
  • WT freshman goalkeeper Alexander Vencel had one save in the half, while the Buffs had two corner kicks to one for the Dustdevils.
  • TAMIU committed six penalties in the first half, while WT had three.
  • The scoreless first half by the Buffs marked the fifth time in six games that has happened as WT has scored just two goals in the first half this season, both coming in the last game in a 5-1 win over Oklahoma Christian (Sept. 16).
  • TAMIU had 12 shots with four on frame, while the Buffs had nine shots with two on goal.Montabes had five shots to lead the Dustdevils, while Reeves had two shots for the Buffs.
  • Vencel had three saves in 90 minutes, while Herrera had two saves and his third shutout of the season.
