  • The Lead: An overtime goal by Midwestern State's Scott Doney spoiled West Texas A&M's upset bid of the No. 8 Mustangs in the Buffs' 2017 home-opener Thursday evening.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half as MSU dominated much of the attack early with three early shots and two on frame.
  • The Buffs came back and had two great opportunities as junior Callum Chaliinor had a shot and save from Richard Goss, followed by a rebounded header from junior Julio Vargas, which Goss also saved 33 minutes into the contest.
  • For the half, both teams had six hits and WT had two on goal, while MSU had three on frame.
  • Vargas had two shots with one on goal for WT, while Pierre Bocquet had three shots to lead the Mustangs.
  • Both goalkeepers, Goss and WT freshman Alexander Vencel had two saves, while WT tallied a team save.MSU's Scott Doney had a header in front of the net saved by a WT defender.
  • WT came out in the second half and dominated much of the attack and had a number of great looks, including two shots on frame from senior Rafael Vasconcellos and senior Chris Johnson early in the half.
  • Later in the half, Challinor made a great shot and Goss had a diving save to protect the 0-0 score in the 79th minute.
  • The Buffs had one last shot attempt at the 89:52 mark as junior Reece Schattle's attempt went just wide ending regulation tied 0-0.
  • The momentum switched back to MSU in the overtime period just a bit as the Mustangs had an early shot and save by Vencel
  • Off a throw in at the 94:09 mark, Alex Mullet dished to Doney who scored to the lower left corner for the game winner and his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs had their chances in the game with 13 shots and five on frame as Vargas had five shots and one on goal.
  • MSU had 13 shots in the game as well with eight on frame, while the Mustangs held a 5-4 lead in corner kicks and WT had seven saves with MSU recording five.
  • Vencel tallied six saves in the game and allowed the one goal in 94:09 minutes.
  • Goss had his second shutout of the season and posted five saves.
  • Bocquet led the team with four shots and two on goal, while Mullet had three shots and two on frame with an assist and Doney had two shots on goal and the game winner.
  • This is the eighth overtime game between the two teams in the series and sixth in the last ten meetings as WT is 2-6 is overtime games against MSU.
  • The Buffs fell to 17-29-3 all-time against MSU as the Mustangs have won the last nine meetings in a row.
  • MSU takes a 1-0 lead in the Highway 287 Challenge this season as the two volleyball teams meet tomorrow at The Box on campus.

  • The Buffs will continue at home Saturday as they will face Oklahoma Christian at 12 p.m. at The Pitch.
  • It will be the second of four-straight home games for WT as the Buffs will host Texas A&M-International and St. Mary's next week.
