  • The Lead: Three goals by the West Texas A&M men's soccer team helped get the Buffs off to a good start in the 2017 season with a 3-0 victory at Colorado Christian Friday afternoon in the season-opener for both teams.  WT scored twice in a matter of nine minutes and the final goal came with four seconds remaining in regulation with an open-netter.  
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Buffs has plenty of good looks in the first half, outshooting CCU 11-5 and 5-2 in shots on frame, but both goalkeepers were up to the task as WT freshman Alexander Vencel made his first start in his first collegiate match coming up with two saves late in the half.
 
  • In the half, the teams combined for seven fouls with four on the Buffs and three on the Cougars.WT's Julio Vargas had three shots with two on frame, while five different Cougars had one shot each.
 
  • Vargas scored unassisted with a shot to the back left corner at the 49:15 mark for a 1-0 lead and his first goal as a Buff after transferring from the University of Memphis.
 
  • Freshman Stefan Andjelic scored at the 58:10 mark for a 2-0 lead courtesy of Vargas as the duo went straight down the middle to the right corner, for a 2-0 lead and his first goal as a Buff.
 
  • Senior Felipe Silva scored from midfield, at the 89:56 mark, with an open-netter for a 3-0 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT dominated the stats as it outshot CCU 23-10 and 10-5 in shots on goal. Vencel made five saves, including one in the final 12 seconds to preserve the shutout in his debut between the pipes
 
  • Vargas finished with six hits and two on goal with one goal and one assist, while recoding his first game winner as a Buff.
 
  • Andjelic had one goal with three shots and one on frame, while junior transfer Callum Challinor had three shots with two on goal in his WT debut.
 
  • WT improved to 10-0 all-time against Colorado Christian and 5-0 all-time in Lakewood, Colo.The Buffs tallied their fifth shutout against the Cougars in series history, and have outscored CCU 36-5 in the ten meetings.
