CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M junior third baseman
Shea Ibrahim finished off a big weekend in style on Saturday night as the senior lifted a two-run walkoff bomb to straight away center field wearing the name of Aviation Electronics Technician Airman Darren Tate, a Canyon native, on her uniform to cap off Military Appreciation Weekend and sweep past the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce at Schaeffer Park. The Lady Buffs run their home win streak to 24 games to improve to 32-6 (17-4 LSC) while the Lions fall to 26-15 (11-10 LSC) overall.
The Lady Buffs hit the road next weekend for Lone Star Conference action as they take on the Aggies of Cameron with a three-game series beginning on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. followed by a Friday afternoon doubleheader with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at McMahon Field in Lawton.
GAME 1- #9 West Texas A&M 11, Texas A&M-Commerce 6
The Lions started off the scoring in the top of the first inning as Kinsie Hebler and Mariah Jameyson registered back-to-back doubles with two outs for the early 1-0 lead.
Shea Ibrahim and
Kourtney Coveney singled to lead off the home half of the frame followed by a wild pitch before
Ashley Hardin singled to center field to drive in both as WT took the 2-1 lead.
Commerce responded in the top of the second inning as Baylea Higgs singled to left field with the bases loaded followed by the apparent third-out of the inning but a close call at second allowed two more Lions to score as TAMUC took the 4-2 lead. WT responded in the bottom of the fourth inning as they tied the game on a wild pitch and an obstruction call, Ibrahim broke the game open with a two-run blast to center field followed by an RBI walk to
Shanna McBroom. WT wasn't done yet as
Shayne Starkey doubled to center field to score two followed by RBI singles from
Alyx Cordell and Ibrahim to run the WT lead to 11-4.
The Lions got one back in the top of the sixth inning on a Cherie Jackson solo blast to straight away center field but
Kilee Halbert would respond to strand a pair of runners with a changeup as WT took a 11-5 lead into the home half of the sixth. Commerce wouldn't go down without a fight as they added another run in the top of the seventh but
Chelsea Skipper entered the circle and forced a grounder to the circle to end the game, 11-6.
Halbert picked up the win in the circle (17-3) for the Lady Buffs, giving up six runs on 12 hits with two walks and four strikeouts in her 6.2 innings of work.
GAME 2 - #9 West Texas A&M 8, Texas A&M-Commerce 7
Commere got on the board first in the finale as Vanessa Avina singled home Jackson with two outs followed by a stolen base before
Alexis Alfonso forced a grounder back to the circle to end the inning with Commerce leading 1-0.
Hardin connected on her 51
st career homerun in the home half of the third inning with a solo bomb to left center to give WT the 2-1 lead, Commerce answered with a bomb of their own as Hebler connected on a solo shot to left center followed three pitches later by a Jameyson shot to left at 3-2. Commerce used the long ball again in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run shot to center by Hebler before Jameyson connected on a solo shot to left at 6-2.
TAMUC added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning as a WT miscue in the outfield allowed a runner to score on a single down the line at 7-2. The Lady Buffs wouldn't go down without a fight as they cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI double from Ibrahim followed by a TAMUC throwing error on a pickoff attempt and a Starkey RBI single to make it 7-5.
The Lady Buffs showed their resilience again in the bottom of the seventh inning as McBroom ledoff the frame with a solo blast to left center field followed two batters later by a Cordell single to left field, Commerce made a pitching change but Ibrahim wouldn't be denied as the South Jordan native launched a two-run solo shot to straight away center field for the walkoff win to complete the series sweep, 8-7.
Kami Merrill picked up the win (3-0) for the Lady Buffs, giving up no runs on no hits with one walk in the final inning of play.
