#11 Lady Buffs Make it 18 Straight At Home with a Sunday Doubleheader Sweep of WNMU

CANYON, Texas – The #11 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M scored 27 runs and pounded out 22 hits on Sunday afternoon as they ran their home win streak to 18 games with a Lone Star Conference doubleheader sweep of Western New Mexico at Schaeffer Park in Canyon. The Lady Buffs improve to 22-4 (7-2 LSC) while the Mustangs fall to 0-26 (0-12 LSC overall).
 
The Lady Buffs hit the road for Lone Star Conference action next weekend as they head to San Angelo, Texas for a three-game LSC series against the #8 Belles of Angelo State starting on Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by doubleheader action on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mayer Field.
 
GAME 1 - #11 West Texas A&M 11, Western New Mexico 2 (5 Innings)
The Mustangs looked to take the early lead in the first with a pair of singles to start the game followed by a strikeout and a WT error with two outs before Kilee Halbert forced a double play ball to first to end the inning. Kylee Moore doubled to left field with one out in the second followed by a walk to Shayne Starkey and Brittany Cruz being hit by a pitch to load the bases, WNMU responded with a strikeout for the second out of the inning followed by a Shea Ibrahim walk to score the first run before a Mustang error to run the lead to 2-0.
 
WNMU plated their first run of the weekend in the top of the third inning on a squeeze with one out before Halbert forced a fly ball to center with an out at third as the runners left early on the tag for a double play to end the inning. Allie Smith singled to right field with one out in the home half of the third followed by a Hunter Ervin double to the right center field gap to put runners on second and third, Starkey singled to center field to drive in a pair with two outs to run the lead to 4-1.
 
Western took advantage of another Lady Buff error in the top of the fourth inning with two outs to cut the lead to 4-2. Cruz started off the bottom of the fourth with a triple down the left field line followed by a bloop single to left center by McBroom at 5-2, Ibrahim drew a walk followed by a Kourtney Coveney sac bunt before a WNMU error scored McBroom followed by a two-runs single by Smith and a Moore RBI double to left center to run the lead to 9-2. WT ended the game in the home half of the fifth inning as Ibrahim crushed a 1-0 offering to deep center field for the walkoff two-run homerun at 11-2.
 
Halbert picked up the win (11-2) in the circle for the Lady Buffs, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts in the complete game win.
 
GAME 2 - #11 West Texas A&M 16, Western New Mexico 2 (5 Innings)
WNMU started off the scoring in the top of the first inning as Mariangela Garcia connected on a two-run homerun to left center for the early 2-0 lead. Ibrahim walked to leadoff the home half of the inning followed two batters later by a Hardin single off of the left field wall to put runners on first and second, Smith singled to left center to drive in a run followed two batters later by a Moore RBI single to right field before a Sierry Gentry three-run bomb to left to give WT the 5-2 lead.
 
Alyx Cordell led off the home half of the second with a triple to left center followed later in the inning by a Coveney squeen bunt RBI and a three-run bomb off of the scoreboard to stretch the lead to 9-2, Starkey gave way to Alexis Alfonso to start the third as the senior struck out two and stranded a Mustang. WT used the long ball to add to their lead in the bottom of the third as Coveney crushed a three-run shot to right center field for the 12-2 lead. The Lady Buffs added to their lead again in the home half of the fourth with a Briana Garza two-run double down the left field line followed by a Chelsea Skipper two-run bomb off of the protective net in front of the scoreboard for the 16-2 lead.
 
Alfonso picked up the win (6-0) for the Lady Buffs as the senior gave up no runs on no hits with one walk and four strikeouts in her 2.0 inning of relief.
