Alfonso’s Gem Isn’t Enough as the #2 Belles Walk it Off in the Seventh, 1-0

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Friday night's Lone Star Conference showdown between #12 West Texas A&M and #2 Angelo State lived up to the billing of one of the best rivalries in all of Division II Softball as over 800 fans at Mayer Field in San Angelo were treated to a classic as the Belles ended the pitcher's duel with a walkoff single with two outs in the seventh inning for the 1-0 win. ASU picks up their 25th straight victory to move to 29-1 (10-0 LSC) while the Lady Buffs fall to 22-5 (7-3 LSC) overall.

The Lady Buffs to take the early lead in the top of the second inning as Allie Smith and Maddie Green singled to center field with no outs but the reigning NFCA DII National Pitcher of the Week Brandy Marlett struck out the next three Lady Buffs to run her game total to five to end the threat.

Marlett struck out eight of the next nine batters that she faced as Alexis Alfonso matched the zeros in the circle as the teams headed to the sixth still scoreless. WT looked to be in position to take the first lead of the game in the sixth as Alyx Cordell singled up the middle to start the frame followed by a Shea Ibrahim sac bunt and a Kourtney Coveney bunt single to put runners on first and second with one out, Marlett forced a grounder to the circle for the second out following by a pitching change to load the bases with an intentional walk before Marlett re-entered and registered her 14th K of the night to strand the bases loaded.

Angelo looked to take the first lead of the game in the home half of the sixth as Madison Greenwell and Bailey Wallace singled with one out before Alfonso forced a fielder's choice grounder to Cordell at short as the freshman tagged out the lead runner before the Canyon product made a diving grab in the hole to end the inning still scoreless.

The Belles ended the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as Danae Bina singled to third base before Green gunned down Bina trying to steal second, Alexis Evans was hit by a pitch and ran for by Kelly Johnson before a grounder to short to move Johnson up 60 feet followed by an RBI single up the middle by Brooke Mangold for the walkoff win, 1-0.

Alfonso picked up her first career loss in Maroon & White (6-1) as the senior tossed arguably the best game of her time in Canyon, giving up one run (earned) on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in her 6.2 innings of work.

The Lady Buffs and Belles conclude the series tomorrow afternoon at Mayer Field with first pitch of a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. in San Angelo.
