#15 Buffs Dominate #10 Javelinas in Sunday Doubleheader En Route to Series Sweep

CANYON, Texas –The #15 Buffs of West Texas A&M scored 22 runs and pounded out 27 hits on Sunday afternoon as they completed the four-game sweep of #10 Texas A&M-Kingsville at Wilder Park in Canyon. The Buffs have now won six straight games against the Javelinas dating back to 2016 and swept them in a four-game series for only the second time in program history. The Buffs are now a school-record best 16-2 while the Javelinas fall to 11-4.

The Buffs will hit the road for the next two series starting with a four games  at #4 Angelo State next weekend in Stephenville followed by a trip to Portales, N.M. to face Eastern New Mexico the following weekend.

"The guys played really well this weekend," said WT head coach Matt Vanderburg. "We stayed focused and were able a very good team. Our pitching was great all weekend especially in the second game with Ryan (Larison) throwing a two-hitter. There is still a lot of baseball to be played but this weekend gives us a lot of momentum moving forward."

Texas A&M-Kingsville scored for the first time in the series in the top of the first as Johua Croft came around to score after reaching on an error. The Buffs took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning as Nick Canas singled to right center with one out before moving onto second on a passed ball. Adam Adkins lined down the left field line brining home Canas to tie the game. The Buffs then took the lead on the next at-bat as Troy LaBrie smoked one to left center to plate Adkins.

The Javelinas retook the lead, 3-2, in the top the second after Levi Zents walked with one out. He advanced to second on a fielder's choice before Croft singled down the right field line to knot the game at 2-2. Croft came around to score on single up the middle by Hunter Perkins with two outs forcing a pitching change by the Buffs as Dominic Yearego relieved Noah Draper.

The Buffs scored three in the bottom of the third after Jimmy Cubillos led the inning off with a single to left field followed with a double to right center from Adkins to bring the junior across the plate to tie the game. After a Luis Amaro walk to put runners on first and second with one out, LaBrie double to right center to plate Adkins giving the Buffs a 4-3 lead. Chad Brown picked up his first hit of the day on a first pitch single to left to load the bases for Cole Sanchez. The junior from Amarillo drove in Amaro with a deep sacrifice fly to left field as the Buffs took a 5-3 lead into the fourth.

Yearego set the Javelinas down in order in the top of the fourth as WT added to their lead in the bottom of the half of the inning with four more runs as Aaron Vallance led off with a single bunt that trickled down the third base line. He advanced to third on a ground rule double from Cubillos before coming around to score on an error by the TAMUK left fielder  Dallas Stefano. Amaro made the Javelinas pay for the mistake as he took the 2-2 pitch off the wall in left center to plate two runs. Brown was the next up for the Buffs and drove in his first RBI of the game with a liner to center field.  

Yearego continued to roll until the sixth inning when the Javelinas made it 9-4 after Kohl Ullman doubled with one out before Croft brought him home with a single up the middle. He struck out the side in the top of the seventh to pick up his third win of the year (3-0) giving up one run on five hits with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Ryan Larison got off to a great start as the junior transfer struck out the first two Javelina batters before getting Hunter Perkins to ground into the routine  6-3 put out. The Buffs got on the board first as Cubillos lead off the inning with a single up the middle followed by a single up the middle by Canas to put runners on first and second with no outs. Amaro then proceeded to bring home Cubillos on a sac fly to deep left field.

The Buffs ran their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second as Larison sat the Javelinas down in order. Brown drew a lead-off walk inning followed by a one out single by Nelson Paredes. Cubillos brought Brown across the plate on a fielder's choice while Paredes came around to score from first on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Amaro drove in his second run of the game in the bottom of the third with a single to left field to plate Adkins who led the inning off with a triple off the wall in right center. LaBrie followed that up with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. The Buffs were unable to capitalize on the runners in score positions as they recorded three consecutive outs. WT added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Vallance came around score on a fielder's choice on a hit up the middle by Adkins.

Larison continued to roll through the Javelina lineup with ease as he struck out two en route to a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth. The Buff offense put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the inning scoring six runs on seven hits. John Baiada got the scoring started with a single to left field that plated LaBrie and Brown with no outs. Vallance put runners on first and second with one out after a walk. Cubillos loaded the bases with a liner to right field. Canas picked up his first RBI of the second game of the double header with a sac fly to center field while pinch hitter Shane Weber sent one off the center field wall to plate two more Buffs. The Buffs plated two more in the bottom half of the sixth just for good measure as Baiada and Paredes scored on a shot to left field from Hunter Henderson with no outs.

Larison (3-0) remained undefeated as he struck out 10 batters while only two hits in a seven inning complete game shutout.
