  • The Lead: The No. 11 West Texas A&M men's basketball team posted a 106-75 victory over visiting Northern New Mexico Saturday afternoon at the First United Bank Center for the 27th-straight home win for the Buffs.  WT had five players in double figures led by 27 points from senior David Chavlovich.    
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Buffs never trailed in the game and used a 7-0 run for a 22-12 lead with 11:59 left in the first half on a layup from junior Ryan Quaid, who recorded his seventh double-double of the season and third-straight with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
  • A triple from Chavlovich and a free throw from Quaid swelled the lead to 13 with 6:35 left in the half at 33-20 and two free throws from senior Rylan Gerber pushed the lead to 17 points at 48-31 with 1:18 left in the half, marking Gerber's first two charity tosses of the season.
  • Five quick points from the Eagles pulled NNMC within 12 at 52-40 with 18:22 left on a triple from NNMC leading scorer Walid Aly who finished the game with 17 points and three triples.
  • Later, Ezini Ugbisien buried a triple for a 60-48 score with 15:41 remaining and then hit two free throws for a 63-53 deficit with 13:20 left.
  • A layup from Jordan Collins with 12:49 left pushed the lead back to 12 beginning a run of 18-2 for an 81-55 lead with 9:53 left capped with a triple from junior Gach Gach.
  • Gach later hit a triple for a 97-64 lead with 4:31 left and freshman Sterling White buried a jumper for a 99-66 lead with 2:38 remaining.
  • Sophomore Drew Evans, playing in his first game since Nov. 12 against Western State, had a steal and layup for a 101-70 lead.
  • Evans then had a dunk with eight seconds left for a game-high 34-point margin at 106-72, but NNMC buried a triple at the buzzer for a 106-75 final.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Chavlovich went 9 of 14 from the field with five triples and was 3 of 4 from the line for 27 points.He had three rebounds with six assists, a career-high two blocks and two steals.
  • Senior Jordan Evans added 17 points with four triples, while Quaid finished with his double-double on 3 of 6 from the field and 5 of 9 from the line.
  • Sophomore Jordan Collins scored 13 points off the bench on 5 of 8 from the field and 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, while freshman Gaige Prim added 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
  • For the game, the Buffs shot 50.7 percent on 35 of 69 from the field, while going 15 of 37 from beyond the arc (.405), including 11 of 21 from deep in the second half.
  • WT struggled a bit from the line, going 21 of 38 for a season-low .553 clip, while outrebounding NNMC 44-40.
  • The Buffs forced 22 turnovers leading to a 27-12 lead in points off turnovers and held a 36-28 lead in points in the paint.
  • Aly went 5 of 11 from the field with three triples and four free throws for the Eagles leading three players in double figures.Ugbisien was one rebound short of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.
  • NNMC shot 40.7 percent for the game on 24 of 59, while going 7 of 17 from beyond the arc and 20 of 30 from the line.
  • The win for the Buffs marked the sixth home win of the season and 27th-straight dating back to the 2015-16 season.WT owns the fourth-longest home winning streak in the country.
  • The 106 points marked the fourth time of scoring 100 or more points this season, the 11th of 80 or more and eighth of 90 or more points.
