  • The Lead: Behind a stellar shooting performance, the No. 12 West Texas A&M men's basketball team won the Rollins Las Vegas Classic with an 88-60 victory over Rollins Tuesday afternoon.  The Buffs scored 52 points in the first half and held the Tars to just 36.7 percent shooting for the game. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Buffs came out of the gates on fire as they made five of their first eight shots and four of their first six triples for a 15-6 lead and increased it to 21-6 through two media timeouts holding the Tars to just three of their first 11 shots.
  • A steal and layup from freshman CJ Jennings put WT up 28-14 with 7:04 left in the first half.
  • The Buffs used a 9-0 run courtesy of a triple from Jennings and Evans and the "and one" for junior Ryan Quaid and a 40-19 lead with 4:40 left in the first half.
  • WT outscored the Tars 12-7 for the final four minutes and held a 52-26 lead at halftime.
  • Rollins came out and cut the deficit to less than 20, but the Buffs settled down and built the lead back to 28 at 69-41 on a jumper from sophomore Jordan Collins with 10:16 left.
  • A jumper by Evans in the paint put the score at a game-high 30 for a 73-43 lead with less than eight minutes left.
  • WT went up a game-high 31 points late and settled for the 28-point win, as even Mat Franco's magic was unable to bring the Tars back.The Buffs went and saw the America's Got Talent winner in his Magic Show Saturday evening when the team arrived in Las Vegas.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Through the first 12 minutes of the game, senior Jordan Evans went 3 of 3 from beyond the arc for a team-high nine points.
  • The Buffs shot 17 of 33 from the field for the first half, while going 10 of 21 from beyond the arc and 8 of 8 from the line.
  • Three Buffs were in double figures as Evans tallied 21 points on 5 of 9 from beyond the arc and 6 of 10 from the field with four free throws to lead all scorers.Quaid had 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jennings has 11 points with three triples.
  • WT held a 24-13 lead in rebounding and held Rollins to just 34.6 percent from the field on 9 of 26.Rollins entered the game shooting 52 percent for the season.Deion Clark had a team-high eight points for the Tars.
  • Rollins was 1 of 6 from beyond the arc and 7 of 15 from the line for the half.
  • The 52 points marked the eighth time this season the Buffs have scored 50 points or more in a half.
  • WT improved to 2-0 against the Tars and posted an 89-68 win last year in Las Vegas in a very similar storyline as the Buffs jumped out to a 53-34 lead at halftime.
  • WT head coach Tom Brown won his 75th game at the helm of the Buffs, as he is 75-32 in his fourth season at the school.
  • For the game, WT shot an even 50 percent on 32 of 64 from the field, including 15 of 40 from beyond the arc and a season-best 100.0 percent from the line on 9 of 9.WT held a 41-30 lead in rebounding and a 20-9 lead in second chance points.
  • Rollins shot just 36.7 percent for the game on 18 of 49, while going just 4 of 19 from beyond the arc and the Tars stayed remotely close on 20 of 33 from the line.WT was called for 26 fouls in the game to just 11 for the Tars.
  • Evans had a season-high 28 points on 9 of 16 from the field and 6 of 13 from beyond the arc, while going 4 of 4 from the line.
  • Quaid tallied his sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Jennings had 14 points and freshman Gaige Prim added 10 off the bench with eight rebounds.
  • Rollins had 19 points from Deion Clark, but leading scorer Sam Philpott had just 10 points off the bench as he entered at over 21 points per game.
  • WT improves to 4-0 in the Rollins Las Vegas Classic with wins over Western Washington and Rollins last season, coupled with the win yesterday against Southern Indiana.

  • The Buffs have a week off for Christmas before hosting Northern New Mexico on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. at the First United Bank Center.WT then will return to conference play Jan. 4 at home in the Highway 287 Challenge Series against Midwestern State at 7:30 p.m.
