CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M had eight football players named to the 2017 All-Lone Star Conference teams, announced by the league office. WT had two first team honorees in sophomore fullback Jordan Johnson and senior punter
John Cummings.
Johnson, a native of Eagle Lake, Texas, finished second on the team in rushing, while playing and starting all 11 games in the backfield. He had 36 rushes for 157 yards and a team-high three rushing touchdowns. He also led the team in receiving with 19 catches for 267 yards and one score with a long reception of 39 yards. Johnson moved to fullback this season in his first season of playing.
Cummings, a native of Plano, Texas, is fourth nationally in punting at 43.6 yards per punt to lead the conference. He also led the conference last season in punting. Cummings has 54 punts this season for 2353 yards with a long of 68 and 17 over 50 yards. He has eight touchbacks, with 12 fair catches and 17 punts inside the 20. Last season he ranked 12
th nationally in punting at 41.9 yards per punt and earned honorable mention all-conference honors.
Freshman kicker Alex Schrag earned second team all-conference honors as he finished the season third in the league in field goals per game at 1.27, ranking 20
th nationally. He went 14 of 25 in field goals for 56.0 percent, ranking seventh in the LSC. Schrag also handled the kickoff duties for the Buffs, making 40 kicks for 2320 yards and a 58.0 average, while recording 21 touchbacks and three kicks went out of bounds.
Senior linebacker
Daelin Young completed an outstanding career for the Buffs earing second team all-conference honors. He earned second team all-conference honors last season. In 2017, Young finished second on the team in total tackles with 76, while tying for the team-lead in solo tackles with 59. He led the team with 12 tackles for loss, while recording a team-high eight sacks, with one pass breakup and 10 quarterback hurries with two forced fumbles.
Young, a native of Mesquite, Texas, played and started all 11 games and finished his career with 42 games played and 28 starts. He finished his career with 182 tackles with 124 solo stops, 31.5 tackles for loss, 16 sacks, four forced fumbles, four pass breakups and 18 hurries. Young finished the season third in the LSC in solo tackles per game at 5.2, ranking 43
rd nationally.
Four Buffs earned honorable mention all-conference as graduate offensive lineman
Dillon Vaughan earned his first all-conference accolades to go along with his Academic Player of the Year honors, while junior offensive lineman
Travis Vornkahl earned honorable mention honors, as did senior defensive lineman
Solomon Perdue and junior defensive lineman
Lance Hyder. Vornkahl earned honorable mention all-conference honors last season, as did Perdue.
Texas A&M-Commerce had eight first team selections and had the Offensive Player of the Year (J.W. Rollins award) for quarterback Luis Perez and Jared Machorro earned Offensive Lineman of the Year honors. League champion Midwestern State had five first-teamers as head coach Bill Maskill earned Coach of the Year honors for the fifth time. Eastern New Mexico's Kamal Cass earned Offensive Back of the Year honors for the second year in a row, while Texas A&M-Kingsville's Jordan Thomas took home Receiver of the Year honors.
Angelo State swept the defensive awards as Markus Jones earned both Defensive Player of the Year honors (J.V. Sikes Award) and Defensive Lineman of the Year. Justin Jackson earned Linebacker of the Year honors and Fred Lawrence was named Defensive Back of the Year for the Rams.
Overall, 129 student-athletes were recognized on the LSC's postseason awards program, with 32 named to the first team, 35 on the second team and 62 garnering honorable mention acclaim. The all-conference teams are selected by the head coaches of the nine league teams.
