CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M and Central Oklahoma have reached a home/home football agreement for the 2028 and 2029 football seasons announced on Thursday afternoon.
Â
The Bronchos will travel to Canyon for a matchup at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium on Thursday, August 31, 2028 followed by a showdown in Edmond at Chad Richison Stadium on Thursday, August 30, 2029.
Â
"We are excited to renew an old rivalry with Central Oklahoma in 2028 and 2029. Thank you to Stan Wagnon and the UCO administrative staff for making this a reality" said WT Vice President of Athletics
Doug Lipinski "The home and home agreement allows fans and alumni of both institutions the unique opportunity to visit two of the top Division II facilities in the nation. Coach Dorrel and his staff have done a great job building a first-class program in Edmond."
Â
The two teams will renew an old rivalry as the Buffs and Bronchos last played each other in 2009. Central Oklahoma holds the 11-8-1 series advantage that dates back to the 1930 campaign. West Texas A&M is a five-time Lone Star Conference Champion (1986, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2012) while the Bronchos claimed the LSC crown in 1998 and 1999 before moving to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2012.
Â
"This is an intriguing matchup on several levels, so we appreciate West Texas A&M working with us to make it happen. We have tremendous respect for Coach
Josh Lynn and the type of program he runs. This series represents the marquee, non-conference competition that Division II football needs" said UCO Vice President of Athletics Stan Wagnon "UCO and WT feature two of the top Division II stadiums in the country and we've had some very competitive games over the years, so it is very exciting to renew the rivalry. WT is one of the iconic names in NCAA Division II."
Â
The Buffs made an appearance in the program's seventh bowl game in 2025 as they defeated Arkansas Tech in the Heritage Bowl Powered by Riot. WT finished the season riding a four-game win streak with an 8-4 overall record.
Josh Lynn guided the Buffs to the most victories in a season since 2021 as well as the most LSC wins since 2012.
Â
Central Oklahoma is guided by Adam Dorrel who recently completed his fifth season at the helm in Edmond, leading UCO to the 2024 MIAA Championship and a trip to the NCAA DII Regional Semifinals where he was named the MIAA Coach of the Year and the Region 4 Coach of the Year. This past season saw the Bronchos finish 6-5 overall with a 6-3 record in league action as they closed the campaign on a two-game win streak.
