  • The Lead: No. 21 West Texas A&M used a career-high 40 points from senior David Chavlovich as they build a 14-point lead, only to see the Grizzlies come roaring back, but the Buffs hung on for a 92-88 victory in the first game of the 2017 Al Kaly Shrine Classic on the campus of Colorado State University-Pueblo.    
 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • In a tight matchup early in the first half as Adams State built a four-point lead on multiple occasions, only to see the Buffs battle back on a triple from Chavlovich for a 17-17 score with 12:20 left in the half and the third tie of the game. 
  • WT took its first lead at 20-19 on another triple from Chavlovich with 11:55 left in the half.  ASU built the lead back to four, but the Buffs battled back on a senior Jordan Evans jumper for a 26-25 lead with 8:26 left in the half.
  • A steal and layup by Shane Johnson cut the WT lead to 33-32 with 6:47 left, but the Buffs turned on the pressure and the offense as the team outscored ASU 22-9 the rest of the half. 
  • WT built as many as a 14-point lead on a triple from sophomore Jordan Collins at the buzzer, with an assist from senior Tommy Gove for the 55-41 score.
  • For all of the offensive power in the first half for the Buffs, WT came out of the gates in the second as it was outscored 15-7 early for a 62-56 score on a jumper from Johnson. 
  • The Buffs ended a long drought with a bucket from freshman Gaige Prim at the 13:32 mark for a 64-56 score as ASU cut the deficit to five twice more through the first 10 minutes of the second half. 
  • WT held a six-point lead at 71-65 off the 13th turnover by ASU with 7:13 left. 
  • Reigning LSC Defensive Player of the Week junior Ryan Quaid, fouled out with under seven minutes left, but on the ensuing possession, WT took a great charge going the other way. 
  • Two quick buckets by the Grizzlies cut the deficit to two at 71-69 with five minutes left as it was as close as ASU was since the 6:47 mark of the first half. 
  • Buckets from Chavlovich and Prim pushed the WT lead to six at 75-69 with 3:50 left.  Chavlovich buried a triple for a game-high 32 points and a 78-69 lead as the Buffs used a 7-0 run since the five-minute mark.
  • ASU's Brandon Sly earned the "and one" for a 78-74 WT lead with 3:06 left. 
  • Freshman CJ Jennings earned the "and one" with 2:04 left.  Then, following a miss from ASU, Chavlovich went coast-to-coast and an underhand layup for an 85-76 lead with 1:47 left.  Since the 71-69 score, WT outscored ASU 14-7. 
  • WT led 85-80 with 1:09 left as ASU made two of three free throws.  Out of a timeout by the Buffs, Chavlovich was fouled making one of two at the line, but Jackson was fouled for an "and one" with 55.2 seconds left for an 86-83 score. 
  • A contested turnaround triple from Chavlovich gave WT an 89-83 lead with 18.6 seconds left.  A quick bucket and triple from ASU cut the WT lead to 90-88 with 1.5 seconds left.
  • Out of a timeout by ASU, Gove got the ball and would fouled immediately with 00.3 seconds left. 
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the half, WT had a season-high 21 points from Chavlovich on 7 of 8 from the field, 3 of 3 from beyond the arc and 4 of 4 from the line.  He was the only Buff in double figures.
  • The Buffs shot a blistering 55.6 percent for the half, marking a season-high for the team on 20 of 36 from the floor.  WT was 8 of 16 from range for 50 percent and made 7 of 8 free throws. 
  • WT held an 18-14 lead in rebounding, while ASU shot 50 percent from the field on 13 of 26, but was 1 of 5 from range and stayed in the game on 13 of 17 from the line.
  • Johnson had a team-high 14 points for the Grizzlies on 4 of 7 from the field with one triple and 5 of 8 from the line.
  • Chavlovich was a career-best 13 of 18 from the field, draining six triples tying his career-high from beyond the arc and went 8 of 10 from the line. 
  • The 40 point outing by Chavlovich ties for fourth-most in school history in a game as Dale Blaut had 40 against Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 14, 1970. 
  • The Buffs improve to 11-5 all-time against Adams State and take both meetings this season, including the 90-69 win in the season-opener last week in Canyon.
  • WT snaps a four-game losing skid in the Classic and improves to 4-5 all-time.
