THE BASICS:

  • Score: Western New Mexico 21, West Texas A&M 17

  • Records: West Texas A&M 3-8 (1-7 LSC), Western New Mexico 4-7 (3-5 LSC)

  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Kimbrough Memorial Stadium)

  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M football team dropped a 21-17 decision on Senior Day on Saturday to Western New Mexico at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.  WT's offense came to life on Saturday outgaining WNMU for the game and had a number of chances to win the game, but missed three costly field goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Mustangs methodically moved down the field using 11 yards on the ground and 30 through the air, but sophomore Kevon Thomas picked off Javia Hall at the one and returned it 52 yards on the first possession of the game.
  • The Buffs, starting junior quarterback Ben Arbuckle, had passes to senior Junior Pome'e and sophomore Avery Lewis moving the Buffs within the five.  Three rushes moved WT to the one, but couldn't get six as freshman Alex Schrag kicked a 19-yard field goal with 8:06 left in the first half.
  • Western New Mexico used a nine play, 75-yard drive as Hall found D'Angelo Bowie in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown pass and a 7-3 Mustang lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter.
  • WT freshman Brandon Blair broke a 27-yard run moving the Buffs to the WNMU 12 on the ensuing drive.  On a 3rd and 11 from the 13, Arbuckle found sophomore Jordan Johnson in the back of the end zone for a touchdown and a 10-7 WT lead early in the fourth quarter.
  • On a third and seven from the WT 26, Arbuckle found redshirt freshman Jared Shirley over the middle for a big 31-yard catch and run for the fourth third down conversion in five attempts for the Buffs.  The first penalty of the game, a hold on WNMU, gave WT an automatic first down at the WNMU 30.  Schrag missed a 39-yard field goal wide left giving WNMU the ball with 5:30 left in the half.
  • Following a punt from the Mustangs, Arbuckle found Lewis on a slant for 17 yards and a first down and the fifth third down conversion of the game.
  • LSC leading punter, senior John Cummings, turned field position with a 59-yard punt from the Buffs' own two-yard line on the second possession of the second half for the Buffs.  Cummings entered the game fifth nationally in punting.
  • Junior Lance Hyder came up with a big 10-yard sack on Hall, but a pass interference penalty set the Mustangs up at the WT 29.  Then, on fourth down the Mustangs lined up in a two fullback and a running back formation and Hall used a naked bootleg to go untouched into the end zone for 23 yards and a 14-10 WNMU lead with 4:36 left in the third quarter.
  • WT had 3rd and 22 as Arbuckle found Taylor O'Neal-Givens for a 19-yard reception and then Arbuckle found Pome'e for 21 yards to the WNMU 21.
  • Schrag missed a 43-yard field goal with 14 minutes left in regulation.  It was his second miss of the game.
  • Following the miss, the Mustangs marched right down the field on a seven play, 74-yard drive for a 21-10 lead as Hall found Bowie for an 11-yard strike with 10:58 left.
  • Arbuckle threw his second touchdown pass of the game, this time 36-yard to Lewis for a 21-17 deficit with 8:42 left in the fourth quarter.
  • On the ensuing WNMU possession, the Mustangs tried a fake punt as Collin Grady, the punter, got stuffed by junior Mykeil Clayton as the Buffs took over at the WNMU 27.  Schrag missed his third field goal of the game – wide right as that marked nine points the Buffs let slip away.
  • WT forced WNMU into a 4th and 27 and Grady was drilled by Clayton as the Buffs took over at the WNMU 15 with 2:59 left.  Following a holding penalty, O'Neal-Givens caught a 15-yard pass for a 3rd and four at the nine with 90 seconds left.  An incomplete pass followed setting up a fourth down as the Buffs were 1-2 on fourth down.  Arbuckle's pass was broken-up by Leo Marin as WNMU took over at the nine.
  • The Buffs used their final two timeouts and a helmet came off for a 10-second runoff.  WNMU then run  Nolan Grigsby out of the end zone with one second left as the game ended.
