No. 21 Buffs Tame Grizzlies in Season-Opener for School-Record 22nd-Straight Home Victory

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M men's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season with a hard-fought 90-69 victory over visiting Adams State Friday evening at the First United Bank Center.  The Buffs had four players in double figures, led by a double-double from junior Ryan Quaid in a game that was much closer than the score indicated. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • In a tight game through the first ten minutes of the contest as Quaid scored on a layup to tie the game at 15 with ten minutes left in the first half.
  • The Buffs then used a 22-8 run over the next six minutes for a 35-23 lead on a pair of free throws from freshman Gach Gach at the 4:18 mark.
  • ASU's Brandon Sly, who was one of four Grizzlies in double figures with 11 points, scored on a layup cutting the deficit to nine with 1:59 left at 38-29.
  • An emphatic dunk from Quaid pushed the lead back to double figures seconds later as the Buffs settled for a 43-32 lead at halftime.
  • Two free throws pushed by Chavlovich pushed the lead to 11 for the Buffs at 49-38 with 17:28 left, but from there, ASU got back into the contest capped by an "and one" From Frederick Jackson with 15:36 left at 50-47.
  • Freshman CJ Jennings scored a layup and Quaid added another bucket pushing the lead back nine, but ASU once again had a rally cutting the WT lead to two points at 61-59 with 11:15 left.
  • A big triple from senior Jordan Evans pushed the lead to 67-60 with 8:58 left as the Buffs outscored the Grizzlies 28-9 over the final 10 minutes for the 90-69 win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Fort the first half, the Buffs shot 12 of 37 from the field for a .324 average, while going 6 of 20 from beyond the arc and 13 of 17 from the line.
  • Senior David Chavlovich had a team-high 11 points at halftime, while Quaid had 13 rebounds and eight points at intermission.
  • ASU shot 12 of 35 from the field, but was 2 of 11 from range and 6 of 13 from the line.Sly had eight points to lead the Grizzlies.
  • Two Grizzly players fouled out early in the second half, but Frederick Jackson stepped up for Shane Johnson as Jackson scored 13 points in the second half after having two at intermission.
  • For the game, the Buffs shot 24 of 61 from the field for 39.3 percent, while going 12 of 31 from beyond the arc and 30 of 39 from the line.WT had 47 rebounds and outrebounded the taller Grizzlies 47-39.
  • ASU shot 24 of 63 from the field (.381), while it struggled from beyond the arc going 3 of 15 and was 18 of 29 from the lien.
  • Chavlovich went 5 of 12 from the field, 4 of 7 from beyond the arc and a game-high 10 of 11 from the line.Quaid went 6 of 9 from the field with three free throws and a game-high 17 rebounds with 15 points.Evans added 14 points and Jennings had 15 off the bench in his first game as a Buff.
  • The 22-straight surpasses the previous mark of 21 wins set in 1927-28.
  • Friday was the first time WT had opened the season at home since 2001-02.
  • The Buffs improved to 10-5 all-time against Adams State and snapped a two-game skid against the Grizzlies.
