THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: West Texas A&M 83, Western State 63

  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M men's basketball team outscored visiting Western State 51-30 for an 83-63 victory Saturday evening at the First United Bank Center.  Three Buffs were in double figures in the game with two scoring over 20 points led by a game-high 25 points from senior Jordan Evans. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • WT opened the game making three of its first four shots, but out of the first media timeout, junior Ryan Quaid scored inside for an 8-3 lead as Western State opened one for five.
  • A quick 4-0 run by the Mountaineers cut the deficit to 8-7, but a triple from senior Jordan Evans, one of his three in the half, pushed the WT lead to 11-7.
  • Western State cut the deficit to 14-12 with 11:42 left in the half, but WT went on a 6-0 run for a 20-12 lead capped with another triple from Evans.
  • The lead was quickly erased as Brady Subart hit his second triple tying the game at 22 with 7:21 left.
  • WSCU's Collin Smith received a technical foul with 6:55 left as WT made three of four tosses on the "T" for a 25-22 lead.
  • The Moutnaineers took their first lead of the game on a layup from Smith with 6:03 left at 26-25.Quincy Harding buried his second triple as the shot clock was winding down for WSCU's largest lead at 33-29 with 2:57 left.
  • WT freshman Gach Gach buried a triple pulling with within 33-32 with 2:39 left, as the rest of the half was scoreless.
  • WT opened the second half on a 10-4 run through the first media timeout for a 42-37 lead.
  • A 14-0 run by the Buffs pushed the lead to 63-50 with 9:31 left in the game as the Buffs took the game over, pushing the lead to a game-high 22 on a triple from Evans with 25 seconds left and settled for the 20-point win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT shot 12 of 29 from the field in the half for 41.4 percent, while Evans led the way with 13 points and Quaid added nine points and five rebounds.
  • The Buffs were outrebounded 21-14 for the half and struggled at the line, going 3-6.WT went 5 of 14 from beyond the arc for the half.
  • Western State was 14 of 29 from the field (.483) and 5 of 18 from beyond at arc.Harding had 12 points for the Mountaineers as they didn't attempt a free throw in the half.
  • The Buffs had another strong night offensively as they shot 28 of 60 from the field for 46.7 percent, while shooting over 50 percent in the second half on 16 of 31.WT went 11 of 27 from beyond the arc for the game and 16 of 20 from the line.
  • Two Buffs scored over 20 points as Evans had a game-high 25 points on 8 of 18 from the field and 6 of 13 from beyond the, while senior David Chavlovich had just two points at halftime and finished with 21 for the game on 5 of 14 from the field, with two triples, eight assists and six rebounds.Junior Ryan Quaid added 17 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing his second double-double in as many games.
  • Western State shot 44.1 percent for the game on 26 of 59, while going 8 of 32 from beyond arc and the Mountaineers were just 3 of 6 from the line.WSCU outrebounded WT 37-34.
  • Subart paced the Mountaineers with 19 points on 7 of 10 from the field and three triples, along with two free throws.

  • The Buffs head on the road for the first time this season as they travel to the Al-Kaly Shrine Classic next Friday and Saturday in Pueblo, Colo.The Buffs will play Adams State on Friday and at Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday.
