Buffs Run Win Streak to Four with 2-0 Shutout at Rogers State

  • The Lead: West Texas A&M scored two second half goals at Rogers State Thursday evening for a 2-0 shutout running the Buffs' winning streak to four.  Junior Callum Challinor and junior Troy Reeves scored goals for the Buffs who posted their second shutout of the season.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Buffs dominated the first half, outshooting RSU 9-1 and 4-0 in shots on goal, but were unable to get the breakthrough goal.
  • The Buffs recorded four corner kicks in the hall to one for the Hillcats.
  • Junior Julio Vargas had three shots with two on frame for the Buffs in the half.
  • WT continued the pressure early in the second half with three more shots on frame and junior reigning Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Callum Challinor scored on a header off an assist from senior Chris Johnson for a 1-0 lead at the 56:58 mark.It was Challinor's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
  • At the 58:40 mark, was just RSU's second shot of the game as Kevin Kwarteng sailed the ball wide right.The Hillcats' first shot came just 8:40 into the match.
  • RSU's Declan Fitzpatrick had a header at the 65:29 mark, but WT freshman goalkeeper Alexander Vencel came up with his first save of the game, as it was the first shot on frame by the Hillcats in the match.
  • On the third consecutive corner kick, the Buffs made the Hillcats pay as junior Troy Reeves scored off the set piece at the 70:36 mark for a 2-0 lead.Reeves scored his third goal of the season on a loose ball in the box following the corner by junior Ivan Ulloa.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs' first goal was Challinors' team-leading third game winner of the year.
  • WT outshot the Hillcats 18-7 in the game and 9-2 in shots on goal, while leading 10-4 in corner kicks.
  • Junior Julio Vargas had a team-high five shots with two on frame, while Challinor and Reeves each had two shots with one on frame.
  • Johnson recorded his third assist of the season, tying him for the team-lead.
  • Vencel posted his second shutout of the season improving to 7-3 with two saves and he faced seven shots.
  • WT improved to 2-0 all-time against Rogers State and has outscored the Hillcats 5-0 in the two meetings.
