Season Stats

CANYON, Texas    For the first time in program history, the West Texas A&M baseball team swept a seven-game series as it posted a 5-3 and 3-0 victory over visiting Eastern New Mexico Saturday afternoon at Wilder Park.  The Buffs improved to 32-15 on the year and 20-12 in Lone Star Conference play.  ENMU fell to 10-37 and 3-29 in league play.

WT won four games in Portales, N.M., in March with two shutouts and won 15-5 last night along with the doubleheader sweep Saturday.  Senior Kyle Tinius posted two saves this weekend for his 12th and 13th saves of the season as he broke the single-season save record held by former Buff Paul Lujan with 11 in 2014.

The Buffs will close out the 2016 regular season next weekend at home against Texas A&M-Kingsville for Senior Weekend.

West Texas A&M 5, Eastern New Mexico 3 (Game 1)

With one out in the bottom of the first, on the third pitch of the game, senior Nick Chapman hit his third home run of the season to left field for a 1-0 lead.  Following the round-tripper, senior Trace Hansen doubled down the left field line.  A strikeout and ground out followed to end the inning.

WT loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second.  On a 2-2 count, senior Mason Shiflett hit a sacrifice fly to center for a 2-0 lead.  A double to right began the bottom of the fourth for the Buffs by redshirt freshman Christian Loya.  He moved to third on a groundout, but ENMU starter Keenan Dodd came back with a strikeout for the second out.  Senior Matt Cole tripled off the left field wall for a 3-0 WT lead brining Loya home.

In the top of the sixth, an error on a throw to first and a miscue on a second throw to first plated the first run of the game for ENMU with one out.  Justin Paul, who reached on the second error, stole third.  WT starting pitcher Austin Moore battled back from a 3-0 count and got Isaak Bustamante to pop out to second to end the inning.

A walk and a double up the middle by Loya put two on with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth as Dodd was relieved by Daniel Schiller.  Junior Troy LaBrie singled to center plating two runs for a 5-1 lead.

ENMU's Chris Padilla doubled off the left field wall for a RBI and a 5-2 score in the top of the seventh with nobody out.  A strikeout, the 10th of the game for Moore, got the first out as WT went to the bullpen in favor of Tinius.  Tinius fanned his first batter for the second out.  Treygra Williams singled home a run for a 5-3 score.

Tinius got the third out with a ground out to end the game for his 12th save.

Offensively, the Buffs were led by Loya who went 3 for 3 with three runs scored, while Hansen went 2 for 3 and LaBrie was 1 of 3 with two RBI.  Moore (8-2) went 6.1 innings, allowing six hits, three runs – two earned, walked one and fanned 10.

Padilla went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored for ENMU.  Dodd (0-3) went five innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs, walked two and fanned three.

West Texas A&M 3, Eastern New Mexico 0 (Game 2)

Williams hit a two out double to right center in the top of the first in the nightcap off senior Brooks Trujillo who started Friday night's game for the Buffs.  Trujillo pitched two innings in the first game.  An infield single put runners at the corners with two outs in the frame.  Trujillo got a fielder's choice for the third out as ENMU left two stranded.

ENMU starter, Chris Miranda-Carr, also pitched last night as WT broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth with a single by Chapman to begin the frame as he advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out.  From there junior Hunter Henderson singled through the left side for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Chapman began the inning with a single and a wild pitch moved him to third as senior Josh Day singled up the middle for a 2-0 lead.  A walk and wild pitch put runners at the corners as Miranda-Carr was relieved in favor of Scott Klein.  Baiada hit a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.

With two out in the top of the seventh, the Greyhounds loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk.  Following a mound visit, Trujillo, on his 93rd pitch, opened the count to Wesley Jordan with a strike.  Jordan fanned at the 1-1 pitch and was looking at strike three as ENMU left the bags full.

Junior Thomas Garland relieved Trujillo to begin the eighth as Trujillo went seven innings, allowing five hits, walked one and fanned five.  Tinius came in for the ninth as he fanned one in four batters for his 13th save.

Chapman had another outstanding game as he was 3 for 4 with a run scored as the only Buff with multiple hits.  Trujillo (7-4) took the win, while Miranda-Carr (0-2) took the loss.  It was the 10th shutout game of the season for WT as the Buffs improved to 7-3 in shutouts this year.
