Chavlovich’s Milestone Night Isn’t Enough as WT Falls to #25 Midwestern State on the Road, 84-75

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – West Texas A&M sophomore guard David Chavlovich scored a team high 25 points as the Arlington native became a member of the 1,000 point club but it wasn't enough as the Buffs fell to the rival #25 Mustangs of Midwestern State, 84-75 in front of 2,600 fans at D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas on Wednesday night. The Buffs snap a seven game win streak to fall to 19-8 (7-4 LSC) while the Mustangs win their first game in five tries to move to 17-5(6-4 LSC) overall.
 
Chavlovich has now registered an impressive 1,011 career points in his two season in a WT uniform as the sophomore leads the Lone Star Conference in scoring this season with 20.2 points per game. To reach the career top-10 for the Buffs, the Arlington native needs 1,138 points for a tie for 10th with WTAMU Hall of Champions member Troy Burrus (1952-54). WT's all-time leading scorer is Martin Lattibeaudiere with 1,566 career points in 112 games from 1993-97.
 
The teams traded misses on their first possessions before Jordan Stevens knocked down a trey from the wing for the game's first points, WT couldn't convert underneath followed by a Mustang turnover as David Chavlovich turned that into a three to tie the game before another Stevens bucket gave MSU the 5-3 lead. The Buffs gave the ball away with a turnover before a MSU miss from deep and another Buffs turnover as Trevor Fuller hit two from the line, Chavlovich answered with another long ball followed by a Bretson McNeal layup as MSU took a 9-6 lead into a timeout with 15:48 left in the half.
 
The Buffs gave the ball back after the break with an illegal screen followed by another Mustangs turnover as Jeff Bonner stepped to the line and knocked down both to cut the lead to 9-8, MSU missed under the basket followed by another Mustang foul as Ryan Quaid knocked down two freebies before a WT foul but Stevens missed both at the line to lead to an Eric Golightly Jr. offensive board and Joseph Prince long ball at 13-9. The Mustangs answered with a bucket followed by a WT miss from deep and another MSU basket to tie the game at 13-13 heading into a media timeout with 10:35 left in the first half.
 
WT missed at the free throw line after the break followed by another MSU turnover that led to a Jerrod Walton jumper before Stevens answered again with another bucket at 15-15, a WT turnover led to a transition three by Stevens followed by another Buffs giveaway and a Magnus Richards layup at 20-13 heading into a media timeout with 7:55 left. Quaid cut into the lead after the break with a layup before Stevens answered with his 12th points of the game with a jumper before bad possessions on both ends as an MSU foul sent Chavlovich to the free throw line to hit two at 19-23, a Mustangs miss from deep led to Tommy Gove hitting one-of-two at the line before a slam by Trevor Fuller ran the Mustang lead to 20-25.
 
MSU quickly added to their lead with a Stevens steal-and-score followed by another Mustang foul as Walton hit one-of-two from the line before turnover on both ends and another Stevens long ball to run the lead to 21-30 heading into a media timeout with 3:51 left. The teams traded fouls after the break as Chavlovich hit one-of-two at the line followed by a Khapri Alston layup before a WT miss from deep and a Mike Udume long ball at 22-35 heading into a Buffs timeout with 2:24 left. The Buffs missed from deep again followed by a WT foul as Stevens Stevens knocked down both freebies before Gove hit a trey at 25-37, a Mustangs turnover led to a Bonner layup heading into a MSU timeout followed by two Alston freebies with just under a minute left before a Quaid jumper. Stevens missed a jumper as Walton rejected a Mustangs trey attempt to end the first half as MSU took the 39-29 lead into the half.
 
The Buffs went 8-of-22 (36.4%) from the floor in the first half including 4-of-12 (33.3%) from deep and 9-of-15 (60%) from the free throw line to go along with 16 rebounds (five offensive, 11 defensive), seven assists, eight fouls, 11 turnovers, two blocks and three steals. Chavlovich went 2-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-5 from deep to score nine points for the Buffs in the first half followed by Quaid with six while Bonner grabbed four rebounds in the first period.
 
Midwestern State went 14-of-28 (50%) from the floor in the opening half including 4-of-10 (40%) from long range and 7-of-9 (77.8%) from the free throw line to go along with 16 rebounds (four offensive, 12 defensive), six assists, 13 fouls, nine turnovers, two blocks and six steals. Stevens went 7-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 from deep to lead all players with 19 points in the first half followed by Richards with five while Stevens grabbed five boards in the first half.
 
Bonner started off the second half scoring with a bucket followed by back-to-back blocks by Gerber and Chavlovich before two freebies by Hershell Grant at 31-41, Quaid answered with a bucket followed by misses on both ends before two more Alston free throws followed by two freebies by Quaid at 35-43. DeVaughn Jones added to the WT lead with a three-point play followed by turnovers on both ends before Chavlovich hit a three from the wing at 38-46. MSU responded immediately with a dunk by Fuller followed by a WT miss and a Richards three-point play at 38-51 heading into a media timeout with 15:58 left.
 
Bonner hit two freebies after the timeout followed by an MSU miss from deep that led to another Bonner bucket, Midwestern missed again as Chavlovich grabbed a defensive board and hit two freebies for his 1,000th career point at 44-51. Stevens answered with a jumper followed by two more Bonner freebies before Pat Smith knocked down a trey to run the lead to 46-56. The Buffs missed from deep but Walton grabbed an offensive board as the sophomore hit two free throws at 48-56, Walton rejected another MSU shot as Chavlovich raced down and finished a layup heading into a timeout with the Mustangs leading 50-56 with 12:34 left. Udume hit one-of-two at the line followed by Bonner knocking down a freebie before McNeal hit a jumper in the lane heading into a media timeout with 11:33 left.
 
Richards added to the MSU lead after the break with a free throw followed by a Walton jumper before a Mustang miss from deep led but the Buffs gave the ball back with a foul as Jordan Evans fouled out of the game with 10:22 left, Alston hit one-of-two from the line followed by one freebie by Golightly Jr. before another WT foul led to Grant hitting two to make it 54-63. The teams traded misses before Bonner hit one-of-two at the line followed by turnovers on both ends as a MSU shot-clock violation sent the teams into a media timeout with 7:48 left.
 
Bonner hit two freebies after the break followed by a Mustangs miss as Chavlovich nailed a three to cut the lead to 60-63, an MSU miss from deep led to a Gove long ball to tie the game at 63-63 followed by a Mustang turnover and foul as Golightly Jr. hit two at the line at 65-63. MSU missed under the basket but a WT foul under the basket but MSU missed both at the line with 6:18 left, WT missed from deep and fouled the Mustangs as MSU hit two freebies before Chavlovich answered with another long ball followed by a Mustang trey by Smith at 68-68. Chavlovich answered again with a floater in the lane followed by a Quaid rejection to head into a MSU timeout with 3:03 left.
 
Alston tied the game again after the break with a layup to go along with a WT foul to give the Mustangs the lead with a three-point play followed by Chavlovich hitting one-of-two at the line at 71-71, Alston responded with a bucket inside followed by a big Mustang rejection that led to a McNeal jumper at 71-75. A WT miss from deep led to another MSU bucket by Stevens to force a Buffs timeout with 1:16 left and MSU leading 71-77. Bonner grabbed a big offensive board after the break as the senior hit one-of-two at the line before Fuller sealed the game with a big slam on the other end of the court at 72-79 before another MSU block gave the Mustangs the possession as Stevens hit one free throw at 72-80. The Buffs missed from deep again as Stevens turned that into two more freebies followed by another MSU block and a Stevens layup, Golightly Jr. knocked down a three in transition to end the game, 75-84.
 
The Buffs went 19-of-29 (38.8%) from the floor in the game including 9-of-27 (33.3%) from deep and 28-of-40 (70%) from the free throw line to go along with 35 total rebounds (12 offensive, 23 defensive), 13 assists, 25 fouls, 18 turnovers, seven blocks and five steals. Chavlovich went 7-of-19 from the floor including 5-of-14 from deep to score a team high 25 points followed by Bonner with 17 to go along with 11 rebounds for the double-double.
 
Midwestern State went 27-of-57 (47.4%) from the floor including 6-of-17 (35.3%) from deep and 24-of-33 (72.7%) from the charity stripe to go along with 34 rebounds (11 offensive, 23 defensive), 13 assists, 30 fouls, 15 turnovers, six blocks and nine steals. Stevens went 10-of-19 from the floor including 3-of-7 from deep to lead all players with 28 points followed by Alston with 12 and Fuller with 10 while Grant grabbed eight rebounds in the game.
 
The Buffs will now wait a week to compete in their next contest as they host the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce in WT's regular season finale at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas next Wednesday with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. The WT Athletic Department will hold their annual Senior Night on Wednesday as the Buffs honor their lone senior, Jeff Bonner in a pregame ceremony. The Lions enter the weekend with an overall record of 16-7 with a 5-5 mark in league play as they fell to Texas A&M-Kingsville (84-71) on Wednesday night in Kingsville, TAMUC will take on #12 Angelo State in Commerce on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
