CANYON, Texas – The Buffs started out the game down four points before they went on a 25-4 run as they rushed past the rival Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico, 97-64 on Saturday afternoon in front of over 2,200 fans at the First United Bank Center on Hall of Champions Weekend in Canyon. The Buffs win their fifth straight game to improve to 17-7 (5-3 LSC) while the Hounds fall to 5-14 (1-6 LSC) overall.
The teams traded fouls to open the game followed by an ENMU rejection followed by a Chaunce Hill baseline jumper at 2-0, WT gave the ball back with a turnover followed by a Hill put-back slam and misses on both ends and a Greyhounds offensive foul with 17:08 left. WT turned the ball over again followed by an ENMU miss from deep and a Jarrod Walton bucket to cut the lead to 4-2 before an ENMU miss and
Jeff Bonner board-and-bucket to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the first media timeout with 15:32 on the clock.
Eastern missed their first attempt after the break followed by Bonner knocking down two at the line followed by a Walton rejection on a Hounds long ball attempt that led to a
Ryan Quaid bucket at 8-4,
Tommy Gove stole the ball away and Quaid scored again to stretch the WT run to 10-0 followed by an ENMU miss and
Jordan Evans three from the corner to force a Hounds timeout with WT leading 13-4. Ladarius Stewart hit a jumper to stop the WT run but the Buffs answered with another Evans long ball followed by an ENMU miss and
David Chavlovich three from the wing at 19-6, the Hounds missed again as Evans hit a transition three from the top of the key before a Hounds bucket and foul heading into a media timeout with 11:42 left and WT leading 22-8.
Stephon Edwards couldn't complete the three-point play after the break followed by a Gove three from the wing before misses on both ends and a Stewart three from the corner to cut the lead to 25-11, WT gave the ball back with an illegal screen followed by a Austin Wood bucket and misses on both ends before a Quaid bucket made it 27-13 before a Lawrence Domingo bucket forced a WT timeout with the Buffs leading 27-15 with 8:39 left in the half. WT added to their lead after the timeout with a Walton bucket followed by misses on both ends to head into a media timeout with 7:47 left.
The Hounds were called for a technical foul during the break as Evans hit one-of-two from the line followed by an ENMU turnover that led to a Walton bucket and a Quaid offensive board and foul as the freshman hit two freebies to make it 34-15, ENMU missed from deep but WT missed two at the line followed by another Hounds miss and a board-and-score by Evans with a foul as the Houston native completed the three-point plat at 37-15. Domingo hit one-of-two from the line followed by a Quaid emphatic slam before the Buffs were called for a block but Domingo missed both from the line at 39-16, Chavlovich knocked down a three from the corner before Stewart answered with a trey of his own followed by an ENMU foul as
Garrett Brockman hit a freebie at 43-19. The Hounds gave the ball right back with an offensive foul that led to a Chavlovich long ball followed by turnovers on both ends to head into the last media timeout of the half with the Buffs leading 46-19 with 3:58 left.
Chavlovich added to his game total with a three from the top of the key followed by a Brady Patterson jumper just inside the arc before an ENMU foul and two Chavlovich free throws at 51-21, another Hounds foul allowed Brockman to hit one-of-two at the line followed by another Patterson jumper and a WT turnover with 2:25 left. Deyton De La Cerda cut into the lead with a layup followed by a WT offensive foul as De La Cerda hit one-of-two at the line at 52-26, the Buffs gave the ball back with a turnover that led to a De La Cerda three from the corner followed by a Stewart steal-and-slam before Brockman hit a three from the wing with a foul as the Amarillo native finished off the four-point play to head into the locker room with a 56-31 lead.
The Buffs went 18-of-33 (54.5%) from the floor in the first half including 9-of-15 (60%) from deep and 11-of-18 (61.1%) from the free throw line to go along with 28 rebounds (nine offensive, 19 defensive), 10 fouls, 12 assists, eight turnovers, two blocks and two steals. Chavlovich went 4-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-6 from deep in the first half to score 14 points followed by Evans with 13 and Quaid with 10 while Walton grabbed seven rebounds in the first period.
ENMU went 13-of-34 (38.2%) from the floor in the first half including 3-of-11 (27.3%) from deep and 2-of-7 (28.6%) from the free throw line to go along with 13 rebounds (three offensive, 10 defensive), 18 fouls, seven assists, six turnovers, three blocks and two steals. Stewart went 4-of-8 from the floor and 2-of-3 from deep to lead the Greyhounds with 10 points at the break while Domingo grabbed four rebounds.
The Buffs tied a Lone Star Conference single-game record for most three point attempts made without a miss during a run in the first half as Evans, Chavlovich, Evans and Gove hit from deep to tie the LSC record at four straight makes without a miss. The only other time in LSC history that it happened was back in 1988 when Abilene Christian hit four straight against Texas A&I (Kingsville).
De La Cerda scored the first bucket of the second half followed by turnovers on both ends of the court followed by a
Rylan Gerber layup and a Stewart board-and-score at 58-35, Chavlovich answered with a bucket followed by an ENMU miss and a Chavlovich three before misses from deep on both ends and a Bonner bucket at 65-35. Gove stole the ball away and finished with a fast break layup heading into a media timeout with the Buffs leading 67-35 with 15:50 left.
Arcaim Lallemand registered his first bucket of the game after the break followed by an ENMU foul as Evans hit two freebies before a WT foul as Stewart went one-of-two at the line to make it 69-38, the teams traded bad possessions followed by an Evans bucket under the basket and an ENMU air-ball from long range with 13:34 left. The Buffs missed under the basket followed by a Lallemand bucket before Walton responded with a layup before another Lallemand bucket heading into a media timeout with 11:59 left and WT leading 73-42.
The Buffs gave the ball back with an illegal screen but ENMU gave it right back as Chavlovich hit another three from the wing followed by an ENMU miss and foul at 76-42, Chavlovich hit another three on a WT inbound play followed by turnovers on both ends and a Stewart floater in the lane at 79-44 heading into a timeout with 9:48 left. Hill hit one-of-two from the line after the timeout followed by a WT miss from deep and a ENMU bucket at 79-45, Evans found Walton for an easy layup followed by misses on both ends before a Walton steal and Hounds goal-tending call heading into a media timeout with 7:28 left and WT leading 81-49.
WT turned the ball over right after the break followed by a Hounds bucket before an Evans layup and
Eric Golightly Jr. steal that led to an ENMU foul and two Walton freebies at 84-49, Stewart knocked down a jumper in the lane followed by a WT miss from deep and foul but the Hounds missed two at the line followed by two freebies by Golightly Jr. at 87-51. Edwards answered with a bucket in the paint followed by misses on both ends heading into the last media timeout of the half with WT leading 87-53 with 3:56 left.
Brockman hit one-of-two at the line followed by an ENMU offensive foul as Hill fouled out of the game to give possession back to the Buffs before a
Chandler Fuzak tip-in bucket at 90-53, the Hounds missed from deep followed by a WT turnover as Stewart hit a jumper in the paint before another WT miss from deep. De La Cerda hit one at the line followed by a WT illegal screen call as Trevon Hall hit a freebie along with an ENMU offensive rebound and another WT foul as Stewart hit one more at the line at 90-58. Fuzak hit two at the line followed by a Hall three from the corner with just over a minute left before a
Joseph Prince baseline bucket and another Hall three from the wing at 94-64, Golightly Jr. answered with a trey of his own followed by a WT foul as Hall hit one at the line for the 97-64 win.
The Buffs went 32-of-59 (54.2%) from the floor including 13-of-25 (52%) from long range and 20-of-28 (71.4%) from the charity stripe to go along with 43 rebounds (12 offensive, 31 defensive), 22 fouls, 20 assists, 17 turnovers, four blocks and eight steals. Chavlovich went 8-of-13 from the floor and 7-of-11 from deep to score 25 points followed by Evans (19), Walton (12) and Quaid (10) in double-digits while Walton grabbed eight rebounds. Chavlovich's seven made treys ranks tied for 6
th all-time in the WT Record Books while his 11 three-pointers attempted ranks tied for ninth.
ENMU went 26-of-64 (40.6%) from the floor in the game including 5-of-21 (23.8%) from deep and 7-of-20 (35%) from the free throw line to go along with 33 rebounds (13 offensive, 20 defensive), 28 fouls, 13 assists, 15 turnovers, four blocks and five steals. Stewart went 10-of-17 from the floor and 2-of-4 from deep to lead the Greyhounds with 24 points while the sophomore grabbed seven rebounds in the game.
The Buffs return to action on Wednesday night as they host the #14 Rams of Angelo State with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. at the First United Bank Center in Canyon. ASU topped the Buffs (75-85) back on January 13
th in San Angelo. The Rams will enter the game with an overall record of 15-3 with a 3-3 mark in LSC play following a 74-71 buzzer-beater win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday afternoon at the Junell Center.
