CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes registered 29 points at the free throw line and had five players in double-digits as they outlasted the visiting Stars of Oklahoma City, 87-74 in front of almost 700 fans at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas on Saturday afternoon. The Buffs improve to 11-5 on the season while the Stars fall to 5-3 overall.
The Stars started off the scoring with a three-point play followed by a WT turnover that led to a Terrence Bonhomme fast break layup before the Buffs got on the board with a
Ryan Quaid layup, the teams traded turnovers before
David Chavlovich hit two-of-three free throws followed by misses on both ends before the Stars added to their lead with a pair of freebies by Dorion Gigger to make it 7-4 before
Jeff Bonner answered with a layup to send the teams into the first media timeout of the afternoon with OCU leading 7-6 with 15:52 on the clock.
Jordan Evans connected on a floater in the lane after the break followed by an OCU charge before misses on both ends before a WT foul behind the arc allowed Bonhomme to add three more to hit total and run the lead to 10-8, Bonner hit two at the line followed by a Chavlovich steal but WT couldn't convert as they missed at the rim followed by a Evan White bucket to force a timeout with the Stars leading 12-10 with 13:21 left. The teams traded misses before
Jerrod Walton hit two freebies followed by an Evans steal but WT missed again and committed a foul to head into the under-12 minute media timeout with the game tied 12-12 with 11:38 left.
Jonathan Reed hit two from the charity stripe after the break followed by another WT miss before the Stars gave it right back with a travel, Evans hit two from the line to tie the game again before Lou Dunbar answered with two of his own to force a timeout with 10:52 left in the half.
Joseph Prince nailed a three from the wing after the break followed by an OCU turnover that led to an Evans three-point play to make it 20-16, Dunbar answered with a three from the corner followed by WT missing two free throws but OCU gave it right back with a turnover under the basket. Bonner missed the front end of a one-and-one but OCU couldn't convert as they missed from deep as Bonner hit two at the line before Bonhomme answered with two of his own at 22-21 to head into a media timeout with 8:18 left.
Quaid found the bottom of the basket after the break before Noel Allen hit two free throws followed by an Evans long ball from the wing to go along with a foul but the sophomore couldn't hit from the line but a
Rylan Gerber offensive board led to two free throws by the Dumas native at 29-24, Bonhomme answered with a pull-up three but Gerber hit one from the top of the key followed by a
Tommy Gove steal and Evans three to make it 35-27.
Eric Golightly Jr. stole it back as
Garrett Brockman hit two from the line followed by a Stars freebie followed by a pair from the line by Golightly Jr. at 39-28, the teams traded turnovers followed by a long three from Evan White but Gerber responded with a three from the wing. OCU answered with a jumper in the paint to head into the final media timeout of the first half with WT leading 42-33 with 3:29 left.
Bonner knocked down a pair at the line after the break followed by an OCU illegal screen but WT would miss from long range followed by a Bonhomme three ball from the wing at 44-36, the teams traded misses before another Bonhomme bucket and a Quaid free throw followed by a White long ball with just under a minute left. The Buffs gave the ball back with an illegal screen but OCU walked on their possession as WT took the ball for the last shot of the half but a Chavlovich NBA range three couldn't find the bottom of the bucket as the Buffs took a 45-41 lead into the locker room.
The Buffs went 10-of-33 (30.3%) from the floor including 5-of-14 (35.7%) from deep and 20-of-26 (76.9%) from the charity stripe to go along with 19 total rebounds (14 offensive, five defensive), 12 fouls, five assists, seven turnovers, no blocks and seven steals in the first half. Evans went 4-of-6 from the floor including 2-of-3 from deep to lead WT with 13 points at the break followed by Bonner and Gerber with eight each.
OCU went 11-of-19 (57.9%) from the floor in the first half including 5-of-10 (50%) from deep and 14-of-16 (87.5%) from the free throw line to go along with 17 rebounds (four offensive, 13 defensive), 17 fouls, four assists, 16 turnovers, three blocks and three steals. Bonhomme went 4-of-7 from the floor including 6-of-7 from the line to lead all players with 16 points at the break followed by White and Dunbar with eight each.
Walton started off the scoring for the Buffs in the second half with a layup followed by misses on both ends before the Stars gave it back with a turnover that Walton turned into points with a floater in the lane at 49-41, OCU answered with a bucket but the Buffs added to their lead with a Walton board and bucket followed by a Bonhomme bucket. The Buffs missed on their end followed by a Bonhomme three-point play before Gove found Bonner under the bucket for an easy layup followed by another Bonhomme bucket at 53-51 to head into a media timeout with 15:54 left.
The Buffs turned the ball over right after the break and OCU turned it into points with a Jamil Donovan three from the wing before Golightly Jr. answered with a long ball of his own at 56-54, Bonhomme knocked down a baseline jumper but Golightly Jr. answered again with a three followed by an OCU layup before a Golightly Jr. three-point play to make it 62-58. The Stars finished under the basket followed by a WT miss that led to a pair of freebies by Bonhomme to tie the game, the teams traded misses before a WT turnover sent the teams into a media timeout with 11:56 on the clock and tied at 62-62.
A Bonner rejection gave the Buffs the ball back as Prince knocked down a three from the corner for the lead before a Romello Chapman jumper sent the teams into a timeout with 11:09 on the clock and WT leading 65-64. WT gave the ball back right after the break but OCU couldn't convert under the basket as Quaid hit a jump-hook followed by a Stars turnover that led to Walton hitting one-of-two at 68-64. Gigger finished a board and bucket followed by a WT miss but OCU missed both from the line before misses on both ends and Walton hitting two freebies at 70-66. The Buffs gave the ball back with an offensive foul that OCU turned into a Bonhomme floater in the lane to head into a media timeout with 7:49 on the clock and WT leading 70-68.
Chavlovich hit two free throws after the break followed by misses on both ends before a Walton rejection led to an Evans turnaround jumper off of the glass at 74-68, the Stars gave the ball back with an offensive foul followed by a Chavlovich floater in the lane to force a timeout with WT leading 76-68 with 5:35 left. OCU gave the ball back with a travel and Walton hit two free throws followed by a Stars miss and Chavlovich three from the wing at 81-68 to head into a timeout with 4:26 on the clock.
Chavlovich nailed a long three from the wing to extend the WT lead before OCU answered with a jumper in the paint before Walton found Quaid under the basket for a layup, the teams traded turnovers followed by a pair of Gigger freebies before misses on both ends and a Walton free throw at 87-72. Donovan nailed a fall-away jumper in the paint followed by a WT miss with under a minute left but the Stars couldn't find the bottom of the bucket as WT took the 87-74 win.

OCU went 24-of-51 (47.1%) from the floor including 7-of-18 (38.9%) from deep and 19-of-25 (76%) from the free throw line to go along with 36 rebounds (11 offensive, 25 defensive), 29 fouls, 10 assists, 20 turnovers, five blocks and four steals in the game. Bonhomme led all players with 30 points as he went 9-of-18 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.
