CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes used 27 points by sophomore guard David Chavlovich as they outlasted the visiting Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville, 76-60 in front of over 1,000 fans at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas. The Buffs improve to 13-7 (2-3 LSC) on the season while Kingsville falls to 9-6 (1-3 LSC) overall.
 
Both teams failed to score on their first possessions as a Ryan Quaid defensive rebound led to a Jeff Bonner fade away jumper with 17:46 on the clock, the Javelinas gave the ball back with an illegal screen as David Chavlovich hit a jumper before a Troy Jones layup and foul gave Kingsville their first points of the game at 4-3. The Buffs missed from deep followed by a Kingsville layup heading into the first media timeout of the game with 15:50 on the clock.
 
Jordan Evans gave the Buffs the lead after the break with a three from the wing followed by misses on both ends before a Javelinas offensive foul gave the possession back to the Buffs as Evans hit another long ball to run the lead to 10-5, Quaid grabbed a defensive board that turned into a layup by the freshman followed by misses on both ends before Quaid hit two at the line at 14-5. The teams traded missed again as a Javelinas offensive foul sent the teams into a media timeout with WT leading 14-5 with 11:56 left.
 
The teams traded misses again as the Javelina scoring drought ran over five minutes before a Will West baseline jumper ended the drought at 5:22 followed by misses on both ends again, Eric Golightly Jr. came up with a steal but WT missed from deep followed by a Jamar Goodwin long ball from the wing to cut the lead to 14-10. The Buffs went on a drought of their own as Golightly Jr. hit two freebies to stop a 5:17 drought before Goodwin answered with a layup and foul to head into a media timeout with WT leading 16-12 with 7:53 left.
 
Goodwin missed at the charity stripe after the break followed by a Javelinas block that led to a Elliot Taylor bucket at 16-14, the teams traded misses before Jeff Bonner hit one-of-two from the line followed by a Walton steal and Chavlovich jumper to run the lead to 19-14. The teams traded misses again as a Golightly Jr. rebound led to a Walton transition long ball from the wing to force a Javelinas timeout with WT leading 22-14 with 4:43 left. West answered with a jumper in the lane followed by a Chavlovich acrobatic layup at 24-16, Tommy Gove grabbed a rebound that led to a Chavlovich step-back jumper before a Kingsville bucket by Goodwin but WT would answer again with a Walton layup heading into the last media timeout of the half with WT leading 28-18 with 3:08 left.
 
Walton finished off the three-point play after the break followed by a Trey Sumpter bucket with just under three minutes left, WT missed from deep as DJ Weathers connected on a floater followed by a Garrett Brockman offensive board and two free throws by Chavlovich at 31-22. Kingsville missed from deep as Gove hit a long ball from the corner before Sumpter hit two freebies to head into the locker room with WT leading 34-24.
 
The Buffs went 11-of-31 (35.5%) from the floor including 4-of-12 (33.3%) from long range and 8-of-14 (57.1%) from the free throw line to go along with 25 rebounds (nine offensive, 16 defensive), nine fouls, eight assists, two turnovers, no blocks and three steals. Chavlovich went 4-of-12 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the free throw line to lead the Buffs with 10 points at the break followd by Evans and Walton with six each.
 
A&M-Kingsville went 10-of-31 (32.3%) from the field in the first half including 1-of-9 (11.1%) from deep and 3-of-8 (37.5%) from the free throw line to go along with 24 rebounds (eight offensive, 16 defensive), 14 fouls, three assists, five turnovers, three blocks and no steals. Goodwin went 4-of-8 form the floor and 1-of-2 from deep to lead the Javelinas with nine points at the break while grabbing five rebounds.
 
Bonner started off the scoring in the second half with an easy bucket from Quaid followed by a Rylan Gerber steal but WT couldn't convert as they missed from deep, the teams traded bad possessions before Goodwin hit a three from the top of the key at 36-27. Quaid connected on a turnaround hook shot followed by a Gove steal but WT gave the ball right back with a travel with 16:57 on the clock, Goodwin finished in the lane with a bucket before Evans scored on a WT inbound play at 40-29. Kingsville answered with a Jones post move and layup followed by a WT miss and a Weathers baseline jumper at 40-33, Brockman found Golightly Jr. for a three from the wing followed by a TAMUK miss from deep and a Gove long ball to force a Javelinas timeout with WT leading 46-33 with 14:41 left.
 
Brockman grabbed a big defensive board after the break that led to a TAMUK foul heading into a media timeout with 14:20 left, Joseph Prince nailed a three on WT's inbound play after the break before West answered with a trey of his own from the corner at 49-36. Chavlovich nailed a three from the top of the key followed by a West jumper just inside the arc before a WT turnover with 12:35 left, Kingsville gave the ball right back with a travel as Prince nailed a pull-up jumper before West hit another jumper but WT answered again with a Golightly Jr. layup and foul to head into a media timeout with WT leading 56-40 with 11:19 left.
 
Golightly Jr. finished off the three-point play at the line after the break followed by a Sumpter jumper in the lane before Walton hit two at the line at 59-42, Kingsville answered with a Boleware bucket followed by a WT miss in the paint that led to a Boleward free throw at 59-45. Chavlovich was fouled behind the arc as the sophomore hit all three with 9:41 left heading into a WT timeout, Jones hit one-of-two at the line after the break before a WT turnover led to a Goodwin fast break dunk at 62-48, Bonner hit one-of-two at the line followed by a Jones board and bucket heading into a media timeout with WT leading 63-50 with 7:49 left.
 
Gove hit one at the line after the break but another was erased with a lane violation before TAMUK missed from deep but WT gave the ball right back with a turnover, the teams traded bad possessions before Jones connected on a jumper in the lane before Chavlovich hit a three as the shot clock expired heading into a timeout with 6:08 left and WT leading 67-52. Jones hit two at the charity stripe after the break followed by a Chavlovich long ball from the corner at 70-54, the teams traded misses before a Walton steal led to a layup by the sophomore with just under four minutes left before Boleward answered with a bucket heading into the last media timeout with 3:16 left and WT leading 72-56.
 
Boleware registered his seven point of the game with a bucket after the break followed by a WT shot clock violation with 2:17 left, Kingsville gave the ball right back with a turnover as Chavlovich turned that into his 27th point of the afternoon with a jumper in the paint at 74-58. Boleware hit two at the line followed by a WT miss from long range but the Javelinas couldn't cut into the lead as they missed under the basket with under a minute left. Prince hit a rainbow jumper inside the arc followed by a TAMUK miss from deep as the Buffs took the 76-60 win.
 
The Buffs went 25-of-55 (45.5%) from the floor including 10-of-22 (45.5%) from deep and 16-of-23 (69.6%) from the free throw line to go along with 38 rebounds (11 offensive, 27 defensive), 15 fouls, 15 assists, eight turnovers, three blocks and six steals. Chavlovich went 8-of-20 from the floor and 3-of-9 from deep to lead all players with 27 points followed by Walton with 10 while Brockman registered six rebounds in the game.
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville went 24-of-58 (41.4%) from the floor in the game including 3-of-16 (18.8%) from deep and 9-of-16 (56.3%) from the free throw line to go along with 37 rebounds (12 offensive, 25 defensive), 22 fouls, eight assists, 10 turnovers, four blocks and no steals. The Buffs return to Lone Star Conference action on Wednesday night as they travel to East Texas for a battle with the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. at the A&M-Commerce Fieldhouse. The Lions are currently 12-3 overall with a 2-1 mark in LSC play as they take on Midwestern State tonight at 6 p.m. in Commerce.
