CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes led by as many as 17 points in the second half before needing six points in the last 44 seconds of the game to outlast the Cameron Aggies, 83-78 on Sunday afternoon at Aggie Gym in Lawton, Oklahoma. The Buffs improve to 12-6 (1-2 LSC) on the season while the Aggies fall to 9-7 (2-2 LSC).
The teams traded misses before a
Jeff Bonner layup from
Tommy Gove started the scoring but Jamaal Brantley's jumper just inside the arc tied the game early at 2-2,
David Chavlovich knocked down a jumper of his own followed by a
Ryan Quaid defensive board that led to a pair of Chavlovich free throws. Cameron answered with a Cameron Lee baseline jumper followed by two Bonner free throws before misses on both ends and a
Jordan Evans long ball from the top of the key to make it 11-4 followed by another trey from the sophomore to force a CU timeout with 15:13 left and WT leading 14-4.
The teams traded buckets after the break as
Jerrod Walton registered his first points of the night with a layup followed by an Aggie bucket before a Quaid jumper at 18-9, the Buffs added to their lead as a CU miss led to a Chavlovich long ball heading into the under-12 minute media timeout. James Cross nailed a jumper after the break to cut into the WT lead followed by misses on both ends before two Cameron free throws,
Eric Golightly Jr. hit a long ball but CU answered again with one of their own followed by a Quaid jumper and two more CU free throws at 26-17 heading into a media timeout with 7:55 left in the half.
The teams traded points as Bonner added to his game total with a board and bucket followed by a Cameron free throw to cut the lead to 29-19, Bonner hit one-of-two from the line followed by a Cameron fast break layup before an Aggie steal that led to a Lee free throw at 30-22. The teams traded buckets again before Cameron cut into the lead with a Cross layup heading into the last media timeout of the half with WT leading 32-26 with 3:40 left. Golightly Jr. hit two freebies after the break followed by Cameron answering with two of their own before a Walton three-point play at 37-27, Chavlovich hit a jumper followed by a Cameron layup before a Prince three ball to run the lead to 42-29.
Cameron gave the ball right back with just their fifth turnover of the game as Prince hit another long ball from the corner followed by a Alexander Malinic jumper at 45-31, WT gave the ball back with a turnover followed by misses on both ends before a WT foul with 30 second left in the half. Lee hit one-of-two from the line followed by a Chavlovich long ball attempt as Cameron fouled the sophomore as he hit two-of-three to head into the locker room with the Buffs leading 47-32.
The Buffs went 15-of-29 (51.7%) from the floor in the first half including 6-of-10 (60%) from long range and 11-of-13 (84.6%) from the free throw line to go along with 14 rebounds (three offensive, 13 defensive), 12 fouls, nine assists, four turnovers, one block and two steals. Chavlovich went 3-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe to lead the Buffs with 11 points followed by Bonner with eight and Golightly Jr. with seven while Bonner grabbed five rebounds in the first half.
Cameron went 10-of-25 (40%) from the floor including 1-of-9 (11.1%) from long range and 11-of-18 (61.1%) from the free throw line in the first half to go along with 17 rebounds (four offensive, 13 defensive), 11 fouls, five assists, six turnovers, no blocks and three steals. Lee and Deondre Ray scored six points each in the first half for the Aggies while Ray also grabbed six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Long hit two freebies after the break followed by misses on both ends before two more free throws by the Aggies to cut the lead to 54-46, WT missed under their basket that led to a Long jumper followed by another Buffs miss and Tyus Momoh three ball to force a WT timeout with the Buffs leading 54-51 with 13:17 left.
The teams traded bad possessions after the break followed by a Prince bucket that stopped an 11-0 Cameron run before a Brantley bucket under the basket at 56-53, WT missed from deep followed by a foul to head into the under-12 minute media timeout with 11:33 left. Brantley hit two at the line after the break to cut the lead to one followed turnovers on both ends as Brantley converted a fast break layup for Cameron's first lead since early in the first half, the teams traded turnovers again followed by two more CU freebies followed by a big jumper from Prince at 58-59. The Aggies responded with a three-point play by Long followed by a Quaid jumper at 60-62 before a CU miss from long range and an Aggie foul to head into the under-eight minute media timeout with 8:00 left.
The teams traded misses after the timeout followed by a Golightly Jr. layup to tie the game at 62-62, Cameron answered with a Brantley free throw and a WT foul on the missed back-end of the one-and-one but CU missed both to keep it at 62-63. Prince gave WT the lead again with a three from the wing followed by a Cameron miss but WT gave the ball away that led to a fast break layup at 65-65. Chavlovich connected on a floater in the lane but CU answered with a bucket of their own followed by a WT miss and a Cross jumper to make it 67-69 but Prince responded again with a three to force a CU timeout with the Buffs leading 70-69 with 3:57 left.
Ray hit a three from the wing after the break before WT responded with a Walton long ball to give the Buffs the lead at 73-72 with three minutes left, the teams traded misses from deep before Lee hit a floater in the lane at 74-73 followed by a CU rejection but WT came up with the ball as Walton found the ball and finished off the glass before Long hit two at the line to give CU the 76-75 lead with 1:24 left. Quaid's board and bucket gave WT the lead again followed by a foul as Long hit two at the line with 44 seconds left but Chavlovich responded with a jumper for the 79-78 lead with 20 second remaining. Cameron tried to take the lead after the break but Quaid grabbed a big defensive rebound on a missed attempt that led to two Chavlovich free throws at 81-78 with nine seconds left, Golightly Jr. ended the game with a steal-and-score to give the Buffs their first Lone Star Conference win of the season at 83-78.
The Buffs went 30-of-59 (50.8%) from the floor including 9-of-20 (45%) from deep and 14-of-16 (87.5%) from the free throw line to go along with 33 rebounds (nine offensive, 24 defensive), 25 fouls, 14 assists, 14 turnovers, one block and three steals. Chavlovich went 5-of-16 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe to score 17 points followed by Prince (16), Walton (12), Quaid (11) and Bonner (10) in double-digits while Bonner had eight rebounds.

Brantley went 5-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe to lead the Aggies with 17 points followed by Ray with 15 and Long with 14.
