CANYON, Texas – The #3 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M looked to pull off some late game magic for the second time in an evening but a pair of strikeouts in the top of the seventh inning with runners in scoring position ended WT's 2015 season with a 3-2 loss to the Cameron Aggies in front of almost 500 people at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas. The Lady Buffs end the campaign with an overall record of 45-11 while Cameron improves to 41-17.
"First of all, I just want to touch on the heart that our kids showed in the last few innings of the ASU game. These kids amaze me with their dedication to the game and they pulled out a huge win in a classic Angelo/WT showdown" said WT head coach
Kevin Blaskowski "I think we spent a lot of emotion at the end of that game and it showed tonight, being on the field for almost seven hours will do that to you. I can't say enough about the legacy that our five seniors have left on this program, we aren't in the position we are today if they don't buy into our process and make it a part of their lives."
The Aggies started off the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as they used an infield single with two outs and the bases loaded as
Stacey Ramirez made a great diving play up the middle that looked to be the last out of the inning but a safe call at second plated two runs for CU as they took the early 2-0 lead. The Lady Buffs cut into the lead in the top of the third inning as Ramirez singled to left field and advance to second on the throw before the Aggies misplayed a ball that allowed
Brittany Gehle to score from third base to cut the lead to 2-1.
Cameron's potent offense threatened in the bottom of the third inning as
Hannah Newcomb handed out a pair of walks with no outs to end her night in the circle as
Rita Hokianga entered, the senior left hander forced a ground ball to second base as the runners moved up 60 feet before Hokianga froze the next two Cameron batters to end the inning with CU leading 2-1. The Lady Buffs looked to take the lead in the top of the fourth inning as a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases and brought CU's ace Kelsey Watson into the game from the bullpen, the senior took the momentum back as she struck out three straight Lady Buffs to end the inning with CU leading 2-1.
The Aggies added to their lead in the home half of the fourth inning as they took advantage of a WT fielding error with two outs to put runners on the corners and eventually scored the runner from third on a first-n-third rundown as Cameron took the 3-1 lead to the fifth inning. WT threatened again in the top of the fifth inning as Ramirez,
Ashley Hardin and
Kaisha Dacosin drew walks to load the bases with one out before Watson responded again with two more strikeouts to run here game total to six in just two innings as CU continued to lead 3-1.
Cameron looked to add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as they used a walk and single off of the left field wall to put runners on first and second with no outs before Hokianga got out of the jam with a soft line drive to the circle that she threw to second for the double play followed by a popup to Gehle at second base as CU continued to lead 3-1. The Schaeffer Park crowd rose to their feet in the top of the sixth inning as
Renee Erwin entered the game as a pinch hitter after being carted off the field in the Angelo State game earlier in the afternoon.
The Lady Buffs wouldn't go down without a fight in the seventh inning as Wilkinson led off the top frame with a single up the middle before Watson registered her ninth strikeout of the night for the first out, Dacosin walked on five pitches to put runners on first and second followed by a perfect bunt single by Taylor as Wilkinson saw an opening at the plate and scored to make it 3-2 with one out. Watson answered once again with her 10
th strikeout of the night for the second out of the inning before the game ended with another strikeout as the Lady Buffs ended their season, 3-2.
Newcomb (11-2) picked up the loss in the circle for the Lady Buffs as the junior gave up two runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts in her 2.0 innings of work while Hokianga tossed another gem in her final career gave in a WT uniform as the Hawke's Bay, New Zealand native gave up one run (unearned) on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts in the final 4.0 innings.
