CANYON, Texas – The #2 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M allowed just one run on three hits as they stretched their winning streak to 17 games on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of UT-Permian Basin during Pro Wrestling Day in front of over 250 fans at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas. The Lady Buffs become the first team in the South Central Region to reach 40 wins as they move to 41-6 overall on the season while the Falcons fall to 8-40.
The Lady Buffs finish off the regular season with a Lone Star Conference series this weekend to decide the league champion as WT needs just one victory to claim the outright title and the right to host the LSC Championship (May 1-2) for the second straight season. The Pioneers of Texas Woman's come to town for a four-game LSC series for Alumni Weekend starting on Friday night at 5:00 p.m. followed by the final two games of the regular season on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. The Lady Buffs will honor their senior class in a pregame ceremony on Saturday and there will be alumni activities throughout the weekend including a Celebration of WT Softball dinner on Saturday evening.
Game #1#2 West Texas A&M 9, UT-Permian Basin 0 (5 Innings)
The Lady Buffs started off the scoring in the top of the first inning as
Stacey Ramirez doubled to left field followed by a
Brittany Gehle bloop triple down the right field line to score Ramirez as the Falcons overthrew home plate to plate Gehle as well for the early 2-0 lead before UTPB responded with three outs in the next four batters to end the inning with WT leading 2-0. WT added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning as
Allie Cranfill singled to left followed by an
Ashley Hardin double to put runners on second and third with no outs,
Hannah Limmer lifted a fly ball to left field for the sacrifice fly followed by a Gehle squeeze bunt single to plate Hardin from third base for the 4-0 lead.
WT used the long ball in the home half of the third as
Kaisha Dacosin started the inning with a leadoff solo bomb to straight away center field followed two batters later by an
Allie Smith line drive solo shot to left center field, the Lady Buffs weren't done yet as Limmer tripled to center field followed by a Ramirez RBI single up the middle to make it 8-0 after three innings of play. WT added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as
Lacey Taylor drove in an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field to extend the score to 9-0, that's all that the Lady Buffs would need as
Tori Bayer entered the game and registered three straight outs with
Morgan Harrison taking care of two of those at second base to complete the combined one hit shutout.
Rita Hokianga (18-4) picked up the win as the senior lefty allowed no runs on one hit with no walks and seven strikeouts in her 4.0 innings of work.
Game #2#2 West Texas A&M 10, UT-Permian Basin 1 (5 Innings)
The Lady Buffs wasted no time taking the lead in the home half of the first inning of game two as Ramirez layed down a bunt single in front of the plate followed by a Gehle two run homerun over the black monster with no outs, WT wasn't done yet as Taylor singled thru the right side to score two more runs followed by a Hardin infield single off of the diving glove of the third baseman and a Limmer sacrafice fly to center field to give the Lady Buffs the early 6-0 lead. The Falcons responded in the top of the second inning with just their second hit of the afternoon and their first run as Niki DeSera lifted a solo homerun to left center field with one out to cut the lead to 6-1.
WT extended their lead in the home half of the third inning as Cranfill led off the frame with a solo blast to left center field followed three batters later by a Ramirez bunt single as the Falcons threw the ball into the right field corner as she raced around the bases to score to stretch the lead to 8-1 after three innings of play. The Lady Buffs weren't done yet as they used a Smith RBI double off of the center field wall with one out in the bottom of the fourth followed by a wild pitch that plated Dacosin to stretch the lead to 10-1 after four complete innings of play.
Hannah Newcomb picked up the win (11-1) for the Lady Buffs, giving up one run on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts in her four innings of work while
Kilee Halbert allowed just one hit in the final inning with one strikeout.
