CANYON, Texas – #1 West Texas A&M used RBI's by
Allie Smith and
Renee Erwin along with a great game in the circle by
Hannah Newcomb as the Lady Buffs outlasted the Roadrunners of Metro State, 2-0 in front of over 700 fans during the Woodward Invitational at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas. The Lady Buffs move to 8-1 with the win while the Roadrunners fall to 7-3.
The Lady Buffs started off the scoring scoring in the bottom of the second inning as
Allie Smith doubled off of the black monster in left field to score
Allie Cranfill who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning for the 1-0 lead. The Roadrunners threatened in the top of the third inning as they had
Hannah Newcomb in a jam with runners on the corners and no outs before the junior righty forced a pair of groundouts to
Kaisha Dacosin at third base along with a strikeout to end the inning with WT leading 1-0.
WT added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as
Renee Erwin led off the frame with a solo opposite field blast over the right field fence for the 2-0 lead. The Lady Buffs threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Ashley Hardin and
Brittany Gehle registered hits to start the frame before Metro responded with three straight out in the heart of the WT order to strand both baserunners as WT took the 2-0 lead into the sixth inning.
The Roadrunners used a WT fielding error to get their leadoff on in the top of the sixth inning before Newcomb forced a groundball to Gehle at second base as the junior flipped to
Stacey Ramirez at second base and the Metro baserunner was called for interference followed by a ground ball to Dacosin at third base to end the inning with WT leading 2-0.
The Roadrunners made it interesting in the top of the seventh inning as they knocked Newcomb from the game with one out and runner on first as
Rita Hokianga entered with a 2-1 count and eventually walked the nine-hole for Metro. MSUD would register a single to load the bases with one out before the left forced a ground ball back to the circle to get the force at home plate for the second out. The game would end at the plate as Hokianga froze a Metro hitter with the strikeout for the 2-0 win.
Newcomb picked up the win (2-0) for the Lady Buffs, giving up no runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in her 6.1 innings of work while Hokianga grabbed her first save of the season as the senior left gave up no runs on one hit with one walk and one strikeout in her 0.2 innings.
