LUBBOCK, Texas – West Texas A&M held as much as a 16 point lead in the first half but long scoring droughts doomed the Buffs in a 93-75 loss at Lubbock Christian at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas on Thursday night. The Buffs snap a five game win streak to fall to 6-3 overall while the Chaps win their fifth straight contest to move to 6-1 on the season.
 
The teams traded turnovers to start the game as the Chaps scored the first points of the game with a steal-and-score before Jeff Bonner answered with a layup to tie the game, Jordan Evans grabbed a defensive rebound that led to a David Chavlovich long ball followed by an LCU miss and an Evans three from the wing for the early 8-2 lead. LCU turned the ball over as Chavlovich connected on a floater in the lane followed by another Chaps turnover that led to a Bonner turnaround jumper at 12-2, LCU ended the run with an A.J. Luckey jumper in the lane before Evans answered with a three followed by another Chaps turnover and a Chavlovich long ball to run the lead to 18-4. Marcus Arrington answered with a three of his own followed by an Evans spin move and score before an LCU missed basket went out of bounds with 14:43 left as the teams headed into the first media timeout of the half with the Buffs leading 20-7.
 
Chavlovich ran his game total to 10 points after the timeout with a jumper off of the glass followed by an LCU layup before the teams traded misses as Rylan Gerber grabbed a defensive board that led to another Evans transition three from the corner, the Chaps cut the lead to 25-12 with a three point play followed by a pair of misses at the line by the Buffs before LCU gave the ball back with an offensive foul heading into the Buffs leading 25-12 heading into the under-12 minute media timeout with 11:51 remaining in the half.
 
The teams traded misses after the break before LCU connected on a jumper in the paint followed by a Gerber offensive rebound and bucket, the Chaps missed two from the free throw line before WT gave the ball right back with an illegal screen that led to a long ball by Luckey to cut the lead to 27-17 followed by an LCU blocked shot but Joseph Prince grabbed a big defensive rebound that led to a Tommy Gove pass to Quaid down low for the WT layup. The teams traded turnovers as the Chaps knocked down a three to get back within single-digits to head into another media timeout with WT leading 29-20 with 7:44 left.
 
LCU knocked down two from the line after the timeout followed by a WT miss from long range as the Chaps connected on a turnaround jumper followed by a Gove charge in the lane, Isaac Cardona connected on his first bucket of the game to force a WT timeout with the Buffs leading 29-26 with 6:02 left. The Buffs turned the ball over right after the break followed by a Chaps bucket inside before a WT turnover that led to an LCU bucket to take the 30-29 lead to force another WT timeout. The Buffs missed on their first possession after the timeout to continue their drought but Gove grabbed a defensive rebound that led to an LCU foul heading into the last media timeout of the half with the Chaps leading 30-29 with 3:35 left.
 
The Buffs turned the ball over on their fifth straight possession after the media timeout followed by an LCU offensive rebound but the Chaps hit two from the charity stripe to run their lead to 32-29, WT missed on their end of the court followed by a Chaps layup for their largest lead of the night at five before a WT offensive foul that led to an LCU bucket before a Chavlovich floater to end the drought. Quaid grabbed a defensive rebound after an LCU timeout as Chavlovich drained a three off of the glass with just three seconds on the clock to send the teams into the locker room with the Chaps leading 36-34.
 
The Buffs went 14-of-26 (53.8%) from the floor in the first half including 6-of-13 (43.2%) from long range and 0-of-2 (0%) from the free throw line to go along with 13 rebounds (three offensive, 10 defensive), 10 fouls, six assists, 10 turnovers, one block and two steals. Chavlovich went 6-of-10 from the floor including 3-of-7 from deep for 15 points followed by Evans with 11 and Bonner with four.
 
Lubbock Christian went 14-of-29 (48.3%) from the field in the half including 3-of-7 (42.9%) from deep and 5-of-7 (71.4%) from the free throw line to go along with 15 total rebounds (five offensive, 10 defensive), six fouls, nine assists, seven turnovers, three blocks and four steals. The Chaps were led at the break by Arrington with eight points followed by Luckey with seven and Matthew Alford with six.
 
The Chaps hit their first shot of the second half followed by a WT miss and an LCU three ball from the wing before Chavlovich answered with a jumper inside of the arc, Gerber grabbed a defensive board as Bonner went to the line and hit two followed by a Chaps long ball and a WT offensive foul on the charge to give the ball back to LCU with 17:28 left. LCU missed on their end of the court as Chavlovich connected on a transition floater from the free throw line before an LCU offensive foul that led to a Quaid finding Evans for a layup to tie the game at 44-44, LCU missed from long range as Quaid fought for a defensive rebound followed by a jump-ball to head into the first media timeout of the half with 15:49 left.
 
Quaid grabbed a big offensive rebound on a missed long ball right after the timeout to finish with a bucket along with a double-technical as the freshman completed the three point play with a free throw, LCU missed as Chavlovich grabbed a board and found Quaid under the basket for a fast break layup before LCU responded with a layup on the other end. WT missed from long range as the Chaps turned that into a fast break layup followed by a WT miss that led to a Chaps long ball from the corner to cut the lead to 49-48, the teams traded misses before Bonner stole away a pass but the Buffs gave the ball right back with an offensive foul with 12:58 left. Arrington connected on a finger-roll layup to take the 51-49 lead followed by an LCU foul that sent Bonner to the line as the senior hit both before the Chaps answered with two free throws of their own to take the 55-51 lead with 11:42 left.
 
The Buffs missed a free throw after the break as LCU turned that into a bucket at the shot-clock buzzer followed by a Bonner layup to snap a drought of over 3:00 without a bucket by the Buffs to cut the lead to 57-53, Ridrell Holman hit a three at the top of the key for the Chaps for their largest lead of the night before Chavlovich knocked down a pair at the line followed by a Luckey jumper in the lane and a WT turnover that led to a fast break LCU layup to run the lead to 65-55 before Quaid registered an offensive board and putback to head into a WT timeout with 9:01 remaining.
 
Bonner hit one-of-two from the line after the timeout before Luckey knocked down a three from the top of the key before a WT miss from long range as the Chaps hit two from the charity stripe to run the lead to 70-58, the Buffs missed from deep again and the Chaps added to their lead with another long ball before a WT missed jumper that led to a floater in the lane by the Chaps. Quaid finished in the lane to end the WT scoring drought but the Chaps hit a three on the other end of the court to head into a WT timeout with LCU leading 78-60 with 4:19 remaining.
 
Gerber hit one-of-two from the line followed by a Prince steal that led to Jerrod Walton hitting one-of-two from the charity stripe heading into a timeout with 3:49 left, Arrington found Holman for a fast break layup followed by a Prince bucket before LCU got one at the line. Walton registered a tip-in on an offensive board followed by an LCU free throw and a Prince layup, LCU hit two more free throws before Antonio Ferreira hit one-of-two followed by a Tyler Rogers layup and WT offensive foul. Luckey went 8-of-13 from the floor including 3-of-4 from long range to tie a game high with 21 points followed by Arrington (18), Marcos Schuster (16), Rogers (15) and Holman (10) all in double-digits.

The Buffs return to the friendly confines of the First United Bank Center next week as they host Mid-America Christian on Tuesday night with tipoff set for 6 p.m. followed by a Saturday afternoon matchup with the Pioneers of Wayland Baptist starting at 4 p.m. as a part of a doubleheader with the #4 Lady Buffs and UT-Permian Basin at 2 p.m. in Canyon. The Evangels of MACU (NAIA, Sooner Athletic Conference) enter the weekend with an overall record of 8-1 as they take on Texas Wesleyan on Saturday night (5 p.m.) in Fort Worth.
