KINGSVILLE, Texas – West Texas A&M's
Lauren Bevan registered a season high 16 kills on Friday morning as the #16 Lady Buffs topped the Panthers of Adelphi University in four sets (25-15, 23-25, 25-13, 25-20) at the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Invitational at the Steinke Center in Kingsville, Texas. The win lifts the Lady Buffs to 3-2 this season while the Panthers fall to 0-6.
The opening set saw the Lady Buffs jump out to an early 7-6 lead and never look back, a Panthers service error sparked a WT run highlighted by a
Kameryn Hayes service ace and a pair of blocks by
Jessica Johnson to force an Adelphi timeout at 11-6. The powerful WT offense continued to roll as they stretched their lead to 22-14 on a
Cori Haley kill from
Kyli Schulz, another small WT run and a
Lauren Bevan kill forced set point as Haley connected again to give the Lady Buffs the 25-15 win.
The second set saw both teams trade blows early to split the opening 22 points of the frame before a Bevan kill and a Panthers attack error forced an Adelphi timeout with WT leading 13-11, the Panthers fought back to tie the set at 17-17 before an Adelphi service ace sparked a Panthers run to force a WT timeout at 20-18.
Marisa Ochoa registered a kill to tie the match at 22-22 before Adelphi ended the frame on a 3-1 run ended by a WT attack error, 25-23.
The Lady Buff jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the fourth set before the Panthers fought back to tie the frame at 4-4, an Adelphi service error sparked a 11-0 WT run that turned the table in the set as the run was highlighted by a pair of Schulz service aces. The Lady Buffs continued to play well as a Johnson and Haley block forced a Panthers timeout at 20-10, Bevan registered the final two kills of the set to give WT the 25-13 win.
Adelphi came out swinging in the fourth set as they took the early 5-2 lead to force a quick timeout by the Lady Buffs, WT fought back to tie the set at 11-11 on a
Leah Mayer block. The teams continued to trade blows as an Adelphi attack error sparked a WT run that saw Ochoa register another kill to force a Panthers timeout with WT leading 19-16. The Lady Buffs kept the momentum after the timeout Bevan registered her 16
th kill of the match to run the score to 23-19 followed by a Haley kill in the middle to force match point, the Panthers cut the lead to 24-20 before an Adelphi service error ended the match 25-20.
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Bevan with a season high eight kills followed by Hayes with 10 and Haley with a career high eight kills, Schulz dished out a career high 23 assists while Hayes tallied 22 for the double-double.
Lauren Britten led the team with 18 digs followed by
Aspen Sanders with 15 while Schulz (14) and Bevan (13) finished the match with double-doubles. The Lady Buffs hit .219 as a team with 51 kills on 146 attempts and 19 attack errors while registering 49 assists and 76 digs on the morning with 9.5 total blocks.
The Panthers were led by Kaitlyn DeStefano with 14 kills followed by Mandy Stanislovaitis with 13 and Amanda Borges/Haley Blunt with seven each, Alayna Jackson led all players with 29 assists while teammate Sierra Crook tallied 21 digs in the match. Adelphi hit .153 as a team with 43 kills on 150 attempts with 20 attack errors while registering 42 assists and 64 digs in the match with three blocks.
The Lady Buffs return to action this afternoon as they face off with the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis with first serve set for 3:30 p.m. at the Steinke Center in Kingsville. Saturday's action will see the Lady Buffs play American International at 8 a.m. followed by WT's Lone Star Conference opener against the host Javelinas at 3:30 p.m.
