CANYON, Texas – The #23 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M used the power of 22 combined kills from
Kameryn Hayes and
Lauren Bevan as they ran their season win streak to 22 matches on Saturday afternoon in a Lone Star Conference sweep of Texas A&M-Commerce (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) in front of over 500 fans at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon. The Lady Buffs move to 30-3 (16-0 LSC) to end the regular season while the Lions fall to 7-22 (4-12 LSC) on the year.
The opening set started off with the Lady Buffs jumping out to an early 4-1 lead on a pair of
Cori Haley kills before the Lions fought back to tie the frame at 7-7 before a
Lexi Davis kill on the quick set from
Corey Davis followed by a L. Davis service ace and a Commerce attack error forced a Lions timeout at 11-9, the Lady Buffs continued to play well after the timeout as they used a
Kameryn Hayes ace followed by a
Lauren Bevan kill to force another TAMUC timeout at 16-13. WT ran their lead to as much as seven points at 21-14 on a Hayes quick set kill from C. Davis to spark another Lady Buff run as a pair of Hayes kills from C. Davis ended the frame at 25-19.
The second set saw the Lions take advantage of a handful of Lady Buff attack errors as they took an early 9-4 lead into a WT timeout, WT responded after the break as C. Davis found
Sydney Harlan on the outside followed by a L. Davis service ace and a huge block by Haley and
Leah Mayer to cut the lead to 11-9 followed four points later by a Commerce attack error on a long rally to force a Lions timeout at 13-10. The Lady Buffs battled back to tie the match at 13-13 on a Bevan solo block to spark a WT run highlighted by a pair of
Jessica Johnson kills from C. Davis to force another TAMUC timeout with the Lady Buffs leading 22-17, Hayes and Johnson would hook up three times over the next five points as WT took the 25-19 victory to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
The third and final set saw the Lady Buffs jump out to an early 8-4 lead before the Lions responded with a 9-1 run to run their lead to 13-9, the Lady Buffs would battle back to tie the match at 14-14 on an
Aspen Sanders ace followed by the teams trading points before a Commerce attack error and a Davis kill in the middle forced a TAMUC timeout at 18-16. WT continued their run after the timeout as Hayes found Bevan on the outside followed by a great cross-court set by C. Davis to Hayes on the outside to force another Lions timeout with WT leading 20-17, the Lady Buffs ended the frame on a 5-1 run as they used a Commerce attack error at 23-18 followed by a Hayes kill and a block by Johnson and Harlan to end the frame and the match at 25-18.
The Lady Buffs were led by Hayes with 12 kills and 22 assists on the afternoon for the double-double followed by Bevan with 10 kills and 10 digs for a double-double of her own on Senior Day, C. Davis dished out a career high 19 assists on the afternoon while
Lauren Britten led the team with 14 digd followed by Bevan (10), Sanders (10) and C. Davis (10). West Texas A&M hit .220 as a team with 45 kills on 127 swings with 17 attack errors to go along with 42 assists, 68 digs and six total blocks in the match.
Texas A&M-Commerce was led by Sydney Reyes and Taryn Driver with seven kills each followed by Amy Davault with six, Courtney Tate led the Lions with 20 assists on the afternoon while Davault led all players with 17 digs in the match. The Lions hit .052 as a team with 28 kills on 134 attempts with 21 attack errors to go along with 24 assists, 54 digs and just three total blocks on the afternoon.
The Lady Buffs will now jump into postseason play as they host the 2014 Lone Star Conference Tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon. Top seeded WT will face-off with the to-be-determined eighth seed with first serve set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night.
