Box Score Season Statistics LAREDO, Texas – Freshman
Brandon Bautista propelled the West Texas A&M men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Texas A&M-International on the road Wednesday night with his first goal of the season, a late second half strike in the 70
th minute. With the win, the Buffs improve to 8-5-1 on the year. TAMIU drops to 8-6-1 with the loss.
TAMIU doubled up the Buffs in shots on the night, 14-7, and also held the advantage in shots-on-goal, 6-4. Leading the way for the Buffs was senior
Vitor Cardoso with two followed by five other players with one attempt each. Sophomore keeper
Patrick Satorie picked up the win and improves to 6-5-1 on the year after grabbing the shutout tonight with six saves.
Chances for either team did not come often early on in Wednesday night's match. The Dustdevils' leading scorer on the year, Jovany Marcias, put up the only shots for the home team in the 6
th and 19
th minutes, sending both attempts off the mark. The first attempt for the Buffs came from Cardoso in the 18
th minute, a shot sent high above the goal.
Satorie and the Buffalo defense were tested repeatedly starting in the 21
st minute as TAMIU was able to generate five corner kick opportunities in the following five minutes. The Dustdevils would only be able to produce two shots in that stretch, the lone one on-goal being sent by Norman Ramos.
The home team would continue to dominate possession throughout the remainder of the first frame, putting up three more shots and being awarded three additional corners. Freshman
Axel Insulander would finally grab the first shot-on-goal for the Buffs in the game late in the 43
rd minute, but both teams would head into the break still scoreless.
At the halfway point, the Dustdevils led in overall shots, 6-2, and shots-on-goal, 2-1.
Other than a quick shot by senior
Michael Williams after play resumed, the Dustdevils continued to occupy their attacking third for much of the first 25 minutes of the second half. Satorie would have to step up for three tough saves, keeping the game knotted at 0-0.
The Buffs then took advantage of the rare opportunity in the 70
th minute as Bautista converted with a strike from two yards out to beat the keeper and give the Buffs the game-winner. Senior
Christopher Hutton was awarded the assist with a cross along the goal line from the close right wing.
With the win, the Buffs improve to 6-2-2 all-time against the Dustdevils and split the season series 1-1 after dropping a 2-1 decision in Canyon earlier in the season.
WT will return to action next Thursday, Oct. 30, as it hosts regional rival Midwestern State in the Buffs' final home match of the season. Live stats and video will be provided by West Texas A&M Athletic Media Relations.
