CANYON, TEXAS – It all came down to the 21
st and final event on Saturday night as the West Texas A&M 4x400m relay squad set a new NCAA Division II all-time record to give the Lady Buffs the program's third NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship in thrilling fashion at Francis G. Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kansas.
The Lady Buffs entered the final event trailing Pittsburg State by 4.2 points as the relay squad of
Sandra Appiah,
Emiliia Tangara,
Abigail Abugire and
Blessing Akintoye blazed their way to a time of 3:32.18 to set a new meet record, facility record and school record with the fastest time in DII outdoor history.
Esther Conde-Turpin added another All-American accolade to her resume in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 13.25 to set a new school record and finish third overall.
Abugire dominated the 800m final as the sophomore from Ghana ran a time of 2:02.56 to set a new facility record on her way to the National Championship while teammate
Sierra Cornell earned All-American honors (2:13.27) with a seventh-place finish.
The women's 400m hurdles saw the Lady Buffs secure 14 points with
Emiliia Tangara concluding her incredible freshman campaign with a National Title, setting a new facility record (56.56) followed by
Asana Hamidu in fifth (59.09).
The 5K final setup the Lady Buffs for the thrilling victory in the relay as
Kalkidan Vincendeau earned a critical point with an eighth-place finish, running a 16:36.28 for All-American honors followed by
Sarah Koomson in 19
th (16:57.31).
