CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M Track & Field set two new school record while registering 20 provisional marks on Thursday and Friday during the annual Jo Meaker Classic at Multi at the WTAMU Track & Field Complex in Canyon.
Deborah Acheampong broke her own school record in the women's 100m finals with a time of 11.21, the fastest time so far this season in Division II while the Ghana product also ran a 23.05 in the 200m for the second-best mark in school history.
Blessing Akintoye continued her impressive campaign, winning the 200m and setting a new school record with a mark of 22.95 to tie the 15
th fastest time in NCAA Division II outdoor history. Akintoye would also win the 400m (53.11).
Asana Hamidu claimed a runner-up finish in the women's 400m hurdles with the third fastest time in program history (57.88).
Leidy Cuesta picked up a victory in the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.37m on her second attempt while
Hope Gray would finish second in the hammer throw with a toss of 54.71m, ranking her ninth on the WT outdoor all-time list.
Kailee Benton finished off an impressive showing in the heptathlon with 4,844 points to finish second followed by
Mara Andritsch (4,838) in fifth.
The men's 100m dash saw the Buffs place three runners inside the top 10 led by
James Dadzie in third (10.21) followed by
Toby Makoyawo in fifth (10.38) and
Jace Lynch in seventh (10.40). Dadzie would pick up a win in the 200m with a time of 20.48 for the fifth fastest time in school history.
The 4x100m relay squad of
Kareem Small, Dadzie, Makoyawo and
Isaac Botsio ran a 39.74 to finish second overall.
Cecil Dosoo claimed a seventh-place finish in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.34m on his opening attempt while
Oyeyoni Oyewale-Johnson won the triple jump with a leap of 15.40m on the opening attempt.
Mahmoud Ibrahim put on an impressive showing in the men's shot put, winning the event with a toss of 17.51m on his fifth attempt. The men's decathlon featured a third place showing by
Emeka Nmesirionye with 7,007 points.
The Buffs and Lady Buffs hit the road next weekend as they travel to Azusa, California to take part in the Bryan Clay Invitational.
