CANYON, Texas – The #2 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M continue Lone Star Conference action this weekend as they return to the friendly confines of Schaeffer Park in a pair of league doubleheaders. St. Edward's comes to Canyon on Friday with doubleheader action starting at 4:00 p.m. followed by a Sunday doubleheader against the St. Mary's Rattlers beginning at 1:00 p.m.
THIS IS LADY BUFF SOFTBALL
West Texas A&M Softball is in their 21st season of NCAA competition as the Lady Buffs are a staggering 802-328 (.710) since reviving the program prior to the 2006 campaign. WT has won three South Central Regional Championships (2014, 2016, 2021) along with a pair of NCAA Division II National Championships in 2014 and 2021.
2025 REWIND
The Lady Buffs capped off 2025 with a 56-8 overall record and 40-4 Lone Star Conference record. WT opened the campaign ranked 13th before quickly entering the top 10 of the NFCA poll. The Lady Buffs spent 10 weeks in the top five including three weeks at No. 1. WT earned a share of the Lone Star Conference regular season title for the second consecutive season.
WT HEAD COACH MICHAEL MOOK
In just six seasons,
Michael Mook has led West Texas A&M to a 263-64 (.804) mark while claiming the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championship. Mook is a two-time Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year (2024, 2025) who has led the Lady Buffs to four NCAA Postseason appearances (2021, 2023, 2024, 2025). Mook recently agreed to a three-year contract extension to keep him the WT dugout until atleast the Summer of 2028. A new era of Lady Buff softball began on June 20, 2019, as Mook was hired as the third head coach in program history.
SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS
St. Edward's enters the weekend 8-15 overall with a 5-7 mark in LSC action. St. Edward's is 2-4 away from Austin this season with road wins at St. Mary's and Southeastern Oklahoma State. SEU went 1-3 last week as they dropped two games to Lubbock Christian before splitting a doubleheader with Midwestern State on Sunday.
Ryan Rangel leads the way at the plate for the Hilltoppers as the junior from Seguin is hitting .298 with three doubles and three homers to drive in a team-best 15 RBI to go along with four walks and five strikeouts.
SEU holds a 3.65 staff ERA, allowing 104 runs (81 earned) on 172 hits with 54 walks and 86 strikeouts. Kylen Padgett has been the ace in the circle, going 6-5 with a 3.04 ERA as the senior righty has allowed 39 runs (31 earned) on 71 hits with 24 walks and 52 K's for an opposing batting average of .251.
SEU HEAD COACH HAILEY POST
Hailey Post is in her third season at the helm of the St. Edward's softball program, holding an overall record of 53-77 during her time in Austin. Post took over the Hilltoppers following six seasons as an assistant at LSC member St. Mary's. While in San Antonio, the Rattlers won a pair of Heartland Conference Titles with two trips to the NCAA Tournament (2022, 2023). Post played collegiately at Central Arizona College followed by two years at Boise State.
THE SERIES
Friday night will be the 34th and 35th all-time meetings on the diamond between the Lady Buffs and Hilltoppers in a series that dates back to 2006. WT holds a 21-12 advantage as they have won the last seven games in the series. The Hilltoppers are 4-14 at Schaeffer Park, dropping their last nine games.
SCOUTING THE RATTLERS
St. Mary's is 17-8 overall with a 9-3 mark in LSC play as they ride a five-game win streak into a Friday doubleheader at Eastern New Mexico. The Rattlers are 1-1 away from San Antonio, splitting a doubleheader at Texas Woman's back on Valentines Day. StMU picked up LSC home wins over Midwestern State and Lubbock Christian last weekend by a combined score of 14-3.
Gabriela Banda is hitting .458 on the year as the junior from San Antonio has seven doubles and three homers to drive in a team-best 27 RBI for a slugging percentage of .729 while also stealing three bags.
StMU has registered an ERA of 3.68, allowing 95 runs (86 earned) on 173 hits with 65 walks and 73 strikeouts in 163.2 innings of work. Emery Aguilar has been the go-to relief option in the circle, sitting 5-1 with a 2.85 ERA as the junior from Georgetown has allowed 16 earned runs on 41 hits in 39.1 frames with nine walks and 12 strikeouts for an opposing batting average of .268.
StMU HEAD COACH TAYLOR LIRA
Taylor Lira is in her first season leading the Rattlers, being named the sixth head coach in San Antonio in June of 2025. Lira came to St. Mary's following five seasons leading the Sterling University. She spent two seasons as an assistant at Barton Community College. The Mishawaka, Indian native played collegiately at Southeastern University in Florida.
THE SERIES
Sunday afternoon will mark the 34th and 35th meeting between the Lady Buffs and Rattlers. WT is 19-14 in the series that dates back to 2006. The Rattlers are 5-13 during games played in Canyon, dropping their last six contests at Schaeffer Park. Nine of the meetings have come in the NCAA Tournament with the Lady Buffs going 6-3 in those games including a win in the 2014 NCAA Division II South Central Super Regionals in Canyon with WT claiming their first Regional Title on the way to the National Championship.
